When most people think Mazda sports cars, they quickly assume the Miata is the topic of conversation. And, why wouldn’t they? It’s the best selling convertible sports car of all time. But, today we are straying from the MX5 Miata to focus on another iconic Mazda sports car, the RX-7. Introduced to the U.S. in 1978 as a 1979 model year, sales of the first generation RX-7 (1979 – 1985) were strong because it offered good performance at an affordable price, and was the only car at the time to have a Rotary engine. The two-seat, rear-wheel drive coupe has a relatively light Wankel engine positioned slightly behind the front axle, thus making it a well balanced sports car with superb handling.
So why is the Mazda RX-7 is on our mind? Perhaps it is because we recently saw an early example at a car show, or perhaps it is because one was recently featured on a great British television show. Regardless of the reasons, it just seemed fitting as cars of its earliest generation are going on 30-plus years and seen less frequently.
Today we chose to feature an ultra-low mileage 1984 Mazda RX7 with a 12A Rotary engine that has a displacement of 1.2-liters and was rated at 105 bhp. We like the car’s well kept appearance, low mileage, and its original factory condition. In ten, twenty or thirty years more time will it be any more collectible than it is now? It is very hard to say. In our opinion, it’s a cult car that you either love, or you might think of it as a bit of a ticking time bomb. But for the mechanically inclined among us who love hearing a rotary engine spin away sort of like an old washing machine, a Mazda RX7 is definitely a car to look out for in the future. Us engine freaks always grin when we see an RX7 rolling down the road.
