The first Range Rover Classic was built by Land Rover and debuted in 1970. The Range Rover became the cornerstone of Land Rover and proved that its off-road capabilities were up to almost any task. The Range Rover also showed roughing it in the wilderness did not mean having to go without some creature comforts. Introduced were comfort and styling normally found on cars and the introduction of coil springs.
Launch of the Range Rover became a success and public demand surpassed all expectations. The versatile SUV saw demand from land-owners, equestrian owners, and sportsmen. Due to its top speed of 100 mph, the Range Rover also found favor with the Police. It soon became clear that a new market had developed with growing families because of the Range Rover’s car-like abilities, high driving position, and strong towing capacity.
Over the next two decades, the Range Rover would be continuously refined. 1972 saw the introduction of a 4-door model. Other refinements included a viscous locking center differential, the world’s first off-road ABS system, electronic traction control and electronically controlled air suspension system.
Due to the Range Rover’s impressive sales numbers, it was largely responsible for a landmark achievement when Land Rover produced its 1 millionth vehicle in 1976.
