This Turbodiesel Mazda Bongo Is Not a Cookie-Cutter Minivan

Compact, imported Japanese minivans are gaining favor with collectors. Unlike drab domestic vans, these little people-movers are often equipped with four-wheel drive, turbo diesel engines, and manual transmissions. The Mazda Bongo, recently available on eBay, is a great example.

Overlanding Ready

The cleverly packaged Mazda Bongo—about two feet shorter than a new Chrysler Pacifica—can accommodate up to eight passengers. It has a boxy shape that maximizes interior room. The clever middle row of seating can be set up to face either forward or back, and the rear seats convert to a bed for camping. The van has original factory curtains for privacy when traveling or hitting the backcountry.

An economical two-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine with a five-speed manual transmission powers the Bongo. It has plenty of pep. With selectable four-wheel-drive, high and low range, and auto-locking front hubs, it’s ready to venture off-road to remote camping spots. The Mazda Bongo’s tidy dimensions and extensive glass allow easy maneuvering and good visibility on or off the pavement.

This downsized van in desirable GSX trim is in excellent condition inside and out. It’s fully equipped with features including carpeting, power windows and locks, cloth upholstery, and the original factory audio system with an aux port. The seller states that everything functions as it should, down to the original digital clock. The interior is immaculate, with no rips, tears, or stains. Even the factory Mazda Bongo owner’s manual is in place, although it may be of limited use to those who don’t speak Japanese.

Nearly Showroom Fresh

The original gray exterior paint still shines. All badging and factory stripes are in place, along with an original rooftop spoiler. The exterior shows no rust, dents, or other damage, and the chrome front push bar and Bosch fog lights are in excellent condition.

Legally imported from Japan under federal laws allowing vehicles more than 25 years old to be registered in the United States, this right-hand drive Mazda Bongo shows just 93,500 miles. The diesel engine starts right up and has no fluid leaks or issues. Recent service included a replacement timing belt and major service, new LED headlights, new rear wheel bearings, and new tires in 2021. The seller just performed an oil and filter change in preparation for the sale.
