Reviews"[A] provocative exploration of a community's response to the mere possibility of a horrific crime. A realistic and disturbing look at our cultural response to mental illness."-- Publisher's Weekly , starred review, * "Young's writing style is assured, and the tension stays high throughout, as local reaction escalates, complete with tabloid headlines, a cesspool of Internet commentary, and the threat of vigilantism. It's a realistic and disturbing look at our cultural response to mental illness."-- Publishers Weekly (starred review), The Babysitter Murders Janet Ruth Young. S&S/Atheneum, $16.99 (336p) ISBN 978-1-4169-5944-1 In this provocative exploration of a community's response to the mere possibility of a horrific crime, Young employs elements from her first book, The Opposite of Music : the present-tense narrative; the Hawthorne, Mass., setting; and the reassuring presence of Gordy Abt, who appears as the boyfriend of 17-year-old Dani Solomon, who is worried because she has TMI--Too Much Imagination. It comes out in daydreams about mocking (and harming) her mother, outing her best friend, and even killing the little boy she babysits. Dani both wants reassurance that she's not a murderer at heart and to escape these frightening, persistent thoughts, but she can't find the words to explain how she's feeling to the people closest to her. When her secret does finally emerge, the repercussions change many lives, even those of people Dani has never known. Young's writing style is assured, and the tension stays high throughout, as local reaction escalates, complete with tabloid headlines, a cesspool of Internet commentary, and the threat of vigilantism. It's a realistic and disturbing look at our cultural response to mental illness. -- Publishers Weekly , May 30, 2011, *STAR, [A] provocative exploration of a community's response to the mere possibility of a horrific crime. SynopsisAn unnerving novel about a seventeen-year-old girl who suffers from a form of OCD that makes her think dark, disturbing thoughts. Seventeen year-old Dani Solomon is not a violent person, but she has violent thoughts. Cruel thoughts. Harmful thoughts. Dangerous thoughts. She thinks about calling her gay best friend a freak . She thinks about knocking her mother off a ladder. She thinks about killing Alex, the child she babysits. To protect Alex from herself, Dani tells his mother. And it doesn't take long for the story to leak, for Dani to be persecuted and ostracized from her community and peers for a crime she hasn't even committed. Janet Ruth Young writes convincingly about mental illness. Dani's disorder is based on a real form of OCD and her treatment incorporates actual psychiatric methods, making Things I Shouldn't Think (formerly published as The Babysitter Murders ) an authentic read that is impossible to put down.
