Fiction but we'll done fiction
Not historically true but a darn good yarn, with some Oscar worthy acting by Don Johnson . Surprise appearance by Rod Steiger, an Oscar winner, who never fails to impress But I bought it for some of the best cinematic footage of horses out there. It was okay.
It just doesn't pull off being a better than okay movie. It should have, but the acting was predictable and so-so even though it had big name talent. The portrayal of the military was fine---the presentation of the closeness of comrades in arms was pretty good---which saved the movie. Since there isn't an okay box to check off for the value, etc., I left them blank. My Dad and his cavalry unit had to turn their horses in at Fort Robinson, NB after only a three day notice to do so---so I do have some empathy with the movie.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

A true account
Met an elderly lady in California at her ranch. Before mentioning the movie, she told us a story of her father's father involvement in a "run" to Canada in order to save two hundred Army Horses. The man was Irish as were most of the crew who went along. When I did see the movie, it was very close to the story she told us. Whenever I can I introduce my friends to this film. No one has been disappointed yet. I've had the DVD forever, but I bought several more copies; I needed more gifts for more new friends.
