Well made but can be a bit complicated for the average user.
Streamlight has always made a quality product in my experience and the TLR 8 is no exception. Solid mounting, tough case and positive controls are to its advantages. But with this new light/ laser there is a big learning and remembering curve. To get where you want to be whether it be laser, light, or strobe you have to go through a sequence of button pushing to get there, sometimes incorporating both hands to do it. This means moving your shooting grip if you have small hands, not something you want to do after unholstering you firearm. In a stressful situation like a gun fight or a home intrusion this can take valuable seconds to do and if you get confused on the sequence it could take longer. Of course you can set it up the way you want it to begin with and hit the on button but if the conditions change you may need a different setting. And to change the setting makes you cycle through all of them, the whole time each setting is visible and can give away your location. Selecting the strobe can be challenging as you have to double clik the button rapidly, this takes some practice. If you don’t push the button exactly the way it was intended, the strobe wont come on.
All in all this is a tough and very compact laser/light, but you will have to take the time to learn and retain the controls and remember cycling the toggles can expose you in a firefight, a time when your adrenaline is flowing and your life is on the line. I could make a suggestion to the company. make One of the two toggles be dedicated on and off. Put a tiny multicolored led on the back of the unit, so you can toggle between the functions without the light/laser coming on until you hit the on/ off switch. This way you don’t blow your cover. As far as value, after reading the manual and box, i see that it was made in a foreign country and assembled here. I would assume the foreign parts are probably From a Asian country were labor is cheap. If the Chinese can make units similar to this for 40.00 to 80.00 then the rest of streamlights cost is name brand. At least the company does employ the US labor force for part of the units build. Cudos to them for that at least. Thats a plus in my book.
But finding holsters for Chinese lights on handguns is daunting or impossible. So we pay for the name brand and the most popular that holster makers use.
Im in my learning curve using the light and make sure I practice a couple times a day until its burned in my memory, but confining a 500lumen light from being seen and giving away your moment of surprise is impossible. I would hate to get shot while fiddling with controls on your weapon wouldn’t you. I give the new light four out of five due to the complexity of the controls and having to use both hands to cycle the controls.
