  • Works well for smaller size studs - not so well for larger

I have only had this set for a few weeks, but I have used the 6mm, 8mm and 12mm stud remover tools from this set. First the positive: The tools seem to be well made, and are packaged in a pretty good plastic case. The 6mm and 8mm removers worked well for taking steel studs out of an aluminum engine block. They did not slip or jump once you got them to "bite" into the stud, and did minimal damage to the stud and threads. The bad: I purchased this set primarily for the 12mm remover, because I had to remove some 12mm head studs from the same engine block. I had an old Lisle "universal" stud remover that works well, but it tends to really bite into the stud when used, and generally leaves tooth marks on the stud, or locally cuts into the threads if you have to use it on a threaded portion of the stud. I had hopes that the Assenmacher set would eliminate or at least minimize the damage to the stud. However the 12mm Assenmacher remover was not able to remove the head studs. It bit and then jumped around the stud rather than biting enough to remove it. Although it did little damage to the stud, it just could not remove these studs and I wound up using my old Lisle remover to get he head studs out of the block. The bottom line is that these work well in the smaller sizes, but I can not recommend them for the larger stud size.
