Cheaply Made. Useless locking System. Poor clamping Design. Does Not Fit 2000-2004 Subarus.
I needed some universal crossbars for my Subaru. I learned that these DO NOT fit a 2000-2004 Subaru Legacy or Outback. Read the item description carefully. The minimum width between your rails is 41". Any less and they won't fit. They came with no instructions on mounting or assembly, but it was pretty straightforward. I like the design of the bars, more of an oval shape rather than round or square which is nice. They seemed pretty sturdy too. They also came with the rubber strip that goes in the middle to help with wind noise. It's not pre-cut, which is fine since these are universal. I didn't like the design of the locking or adjusting mechanism. The locking mechanism is a joke as the lock cores, while made of cast zinc, fit into plastic locking lugs that can be broken off easily with a screwdriver. After one use, one of the lock cores actually dislodged itself from the plastic housing when I turned the key, so it doesn't lock any more. Also, the clamps are tightened by the bar's end caps. There's an 8" long, 8mm square metal rod that fits into the end cap and goes into a receptacle in the clamp. Turning it clockwise tightens the clamp, and counterclockwise loosens it. You need to be careful because over-tightening will crack and possibly break off the plastic part the rod is pressed into. Other designs use an allen key to tighten the clamps. So I give it an F on those parts, which are pretty critical. As a plus, it wasn't difficult to fix the fact they didn't fit my car by buying some 3/16" square steel rod and cutting it to length so it was long enough to reach the clamp. On a positive note, once the rubber sealing strip was in place, there's little to no wind noise on the highway, but fitting the strip was a pain. Overall, due to the poor design of the clamp and locking mechanism, I can't recommend these. Go with a set of bars with a more traditional design and lock system.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
