Reviews"Anthony has made a difference in the lives of many magnificent animals who otherwise would have been lost to the world. When you're feeling down and out and defeated and ready to give up, read this inspiring book and share it widely with others." --Marc Bekoff, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals "In my thirty-five years of studying man/animal communication I have met only a few individuals who have the ability to enter into the metaphysical realm of the exotic animal. Lawrence Anthony has been there and back. His wonderfully written book The Elephant Whisperer is a true reflection of his ability to be one of the pachyderms." --Ralph Helfer, author of Modoc "A lovingly written tale of close encounters, some beautiful and some frightening, with humans and nonhumans alike. Anthony's story of his trials and tribulations in preserving a herd of African elephants is a parable for the continent." --Irene M. Pepperberg, author of Alex & Me "An engaging and vividly personal account, The Elephant Whisperer invites you in, as confidant and confederate, from the first page and holds you rapt to the very last. A compelling reminder of the power and mysteries of the natural world, Thula Thula's elephants are lucky to have a friend like Lawrence Anthony." --Amelia Thomas, author of The Zoo on the Road to Nablus " The Elephant Whisperer is every bit as much a page-turner as a novel. ... Anyone who remembers Born Free , a personal story of tamed East African lions, will hope this book, too, is destined for the screen." -- San Francisco Book Review, "An inspiring, multifaceted account, Anthony's book offers fascinating insights into the lives of wild elephants in the broader context of Zulu culture in post-Apartheid South Africa." - Publishers Weekly "Both heartwarming and heartening. . . . Anthony's enthusiasm and obvious love for the bush shine through in hairraising, sad, and funny tales." - Booklist, A lovingly written tale of close encounters, some beautiful and some frightening, with humans and nonhumans alike. SynopsisLawrence Anthony devoted his life to animal conservation, protecting the world's endangered species. Then he was asked to accept a herd of "rogue" wild elephants on his Thula Thula game reserve in Zululand. His common sense told him to refuse, but he was the herd's last chance of survival: they would be killed if he wouldn't take them. In order to save their lives, Anthony took them in. In the years that followed he became a part of their family. And as he battled to create a bond with the elephants, he came to realize that they had a great deal to teach him about life, loyalty, and freedom. The Elephant Whisperer is a heartwarming, exciting, funny, and sometimes sad memoir of Anthony's experiences with these huge yet sympathetic creatures. Set against the background of life on an African game reserve, with unforgettable characters and exotic wildlife, Anthony's unrelenting efforts at animal protection and his remarkable connection with nature will inspire animal lovers and adventurous souls everywhere.

  • Might the real title be "Elephants Whispering"?

Mostly many compelling stories, well written and effectively described. I suspect the title is a little exaggerated because it's really the elephants who are whispering to the author, as I also suspect the author would agree. It's good to know the man was listening, and created a book to tell about his experiences.

  • The Elephant Whisperer - a fascinating book!

A friend loaned me this book to read. I enjoyed it so much that I bought this copy for one of my friends. Lawrence Anthony was able to communicate with the elephants in his santuary Thula Thula. In saving this herd of initially rogue elephants, Anthony had to overcome many obstacles. He was able to do this by learning to talk (whisper!) to the elephants. When Anthony died of a heart attack at the age of 65, his elephant herd know of his death and came to his house in Thula Thula to show their sympathy. Elephants are able to communicate in ways we have yet to understand. I highly recommend this book!

  • Wonderful true story of Africa and Elephants

I read this book on the recommendation from a friend, and I enjoyed it immensely from beginning to end. As a life long elephant lover, I found the story of the rogue elephant herd and their habits to be both interesting and surprising. The story line never got bogged down as something was always happening, sometimes sad, sometimes funny and always surprising. I liked the book so much I bought a copy for my son for Christmas.

  • Great book. A page turner fir animal lovers.

Awesome story of a wildlife preserve in Africa and the rogue elephants that were saved by the manager of a large preserve. It’s exciting and very interesting As well as true. I could t put it down. I was surprised by the depth of intelligence of the elephant family that was saved. They are truly sentient in their ability to understand humans and each other.

  • Nails it.

Excellent story. A way to learn, not just the elephant story, but of several other animals. Many humerus, as well as breath taking run-ins in wild. I enjoyed every chapter. I have an urge to visit that reserve.

  • Wonderful story

Great story about the addition of a herd of "difficult" elephants to an African game reserve. Fascinating insights into African culture, animal behavior, and the way game reserves are managed. Couldn't put it down!
