ReviewsPRAISE FOR THE GOLDFINCH "A long-awaited, elegant meditation on love, memory, and the haunting power of art....Eloquent and assured, with memorable characters....A standout-and well-worth the wait."--Kirkus (Starred Review), " The Goldfinch is a rarity that comes along perhaps half a dozen times per decade, a smartly written literary novel that connects with the heart as well as the mind....Donna Tartt has delivered an extraordinary work of fiction."-- Stephen King, The New York Times Book Review, "Drenched in sensory detail, infused with Theo's churning thoughts and feelings, sparked by nimble dialogue, and propelled by escalating cosmic angst and thriller action, Tartt's trenchant, defiant, engrossing, and rocketing novel conducts a grand inquiry into the mystery and sorrow of survival, beauty and obsession, and the promise of art."-- Booklist (Starred Review), "There's a bewitching urgency to the narration that's impossible to resist. Theo is magnetic.... The Goldfinch is a pleasure to read."-- Publishers Weekly, "Donna Tartt is clearly a gifted writer. . . . The cadence of her sentences, the authority with which she shaped 500-plus pages of an erudite page-turner indicate she has the ability to leave her literary contemporaries standing in the road. . . . The decision to murder has about it the inevitability of classical Greek tragedy."--Miami Herald, "Tartt's voice is unlike that of any of her contemporaries. Her beautiful language, intricate plotting, fascinating characters, and intellectual energy make her debut by far the most interesting work yet from her generation."--Boston Globe, "A long-awaited, elegant meditation on love, memory, and the haunting power of art....Eloquent and assured, with memorable characters....A standout-and well-worth the wait."--Kirkus (Starred Review), "The Goldfinch is a book about art in all its forms, and right from the start we remember why we enjoy Donna Tartt so much: the humming plot and elegant prose; the living, breathing characters; the perfectly captured settings....Joy and sorrow exist in the same breath, and by the end The Goldfinch hangs in our stolen heart."--Vanity Fair, PRAISE FOR THE SECRET HISTORY "The Secret History succeeds magnificently....A remarkably powerful novel [and] a ferociously well-paced entertainment...Forceful, cerebral, and impeccably controlled."--New York Times, "Dazzling....[A] glorious, Dickensian novel, a novel that pulls together all Ms. Tartt's remarkable storytelling talents into a rapturous, symphonic whole and reminds the reader of the immersive, stay-up-all-night pleasures of reading."-- Michiko Kakutani, New York Times, "Enthralling. . . . A remarkably powerful novel [and] a ferociously well-paced entertainment. . . . Forceful, cerebral, and impeccably controlled."--New York Times Book Review

SynopsisA young New Yorker grieving his mother's death is pulled into a gritty underworld of art and wealth in this "extraordinary" and beloved Pulitzer Prize winner from the author of The Secret History that "connects with the heart as well as the mind" (Stephen King, New York Times Book Review ). Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by a longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into a wealthy and insular art community. As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love -- and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle. The Goldfinch is a mesmerizing, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends triumph, an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention. From the streets of New York to the dark corners of the art underworld, this "soaring masterpiece" examines the devastating impact of grief and the ruthless machinations of fate (Ron Charles, Washington Post )., A young New Yorker grieving his mother's death is pulled into a gritty underworld of art and wealth in this "extraordinary" and beloved Pulitzer Prize winner that "connects with the heart as well as the mind" (Stephen King, New York Times Book Review ). An experience you will never forget

Dark matter, high times, soul searching, crime, redemption, rich, dirt poor, Tartt covers it all with finesse worthy of the pulitzer prize she was awarded. Far above the pulp grinders that make the New York Times 'best seller' list year after year...this is a one off, digging deeply into the goodness as well as the vagarity of the human psyche, and it's apparent she has actually experienced or been well advised in regards to the highs and lows of this roller coaster ride that many of us have not and will not ever experience.

    Grows tedious

Goldfinch starts out in language that feels luxurious, taking its time to tell its story in masterful descriptive language, but grows more and more self-indulgent. That is fine, so long as the reader also benefits, but by page 600 or so, I found that the book got so tedious that I wanted to throw it against the wall, which is a shame because I really wanted to find out what happens to the characters, but cold not stand one more paragraph of the run-on sludge. (I know. I know.) It's frustrating because Tartt is obviously so darned gifted and skilled. She needs an editor with more of an iron hand.

  • A mind-blowing must read!

From the first sentence to the last, this book grabbed me and would not let go! Haven't read a book that affected me this much in years and I read A LOT! I never wanted it to end! I have lent this book to every reader I know and their reaction is the same as mine. No surprise it won the Pulitzer. If you read no other book this year, make it "The Goldfinch." You will NOT regret it. Ms. Tartt is a talent to be reckoned with!

  • Fitting; succinct.

A very compelling story that I find hard to put down. I am about 3/4 finished with the book and hoping for a brighter ending than the story throughout has been. Eager to see how it ends. Love the writing and will look for other work by this author.

  • A book not worth reading in my opinion

I thought this book was terrible. I can't image how much more misery the author could have visited upon the main characater.

  • A wonderful world

One of my top ten favorite books after decades of reading. The characters, plot, settings, details, themes, vocabulary and literary devices make the book captivating. I've read it over and over, there's so much to it I can't imagine ever getting tired of it. I bought this inexpensive copy to mark up.
