  • Dex Drive: Great Save Compatibility and Ease of Use

I primarily tested the Dex Drive with original 1st-party Memory Cards, but many of Interacts own cards work with the device as well. The manual has special instructions just for using their cards and from what little I used them they seemed to work fine. I ordered the product to transfer my ghosts from Crash Team Racing, and I was a little worried that the device would not work well with multi-block saves. The device is pretty clever in that it automatically transfers over all the required blocks of a save whenever you attempt to move any individual part. This is great for games like Gran Turismo or the aforementioned CTR ghosts as it assures the complete file will be transfered. The transferred files are the originals so the save will be exactly the same. Every file I have moved over had worked flawlessly. The device rips the entire memory card at once into one .mcr file on your PC, but from that file you can delete or transfer individual saves. However, if you want to have many individual PC files with only one save on them then you will have to make many copies and trim them down individually. It's more of a nitpick but it can be a little time consuming. The layout is pretty simple and the files even have little animated thumbnails that represent the graphics for a save you would see in the actual system menu for the PS1. There are dedicated buttons to click that each have clearly labeled purposes, but in some cases dragging files within the program with other methods will work for accomplishing the task. This makes moving an individual file that's been backed up on the PC over to another card very easy. It should be noted that I always used the AC Adapter when using this device, though the manual seems to suggest that with most cards the device doesn't need the AC Adapter. I also used an actual Windows98 machine and can't confirm if it will work on anything else (the provided paperwork states the drive is compatible with Windows95 as well).
