Sony ICF-S10MK2 2 Band pocket radio
I was looking for a pocket size AM/FM radio with decent performance. I read many reviews, and was torn between this model and the newer ICF-26 which replaces the discontinued S10. Here's why I chose the S10. It has been around many years, with an excellent track record. Sony's choice of 2 AA batteries instead of a 9 volt is very wise,as well as an analog display, because both save battery life, by quite a bit. Reception was excellent on both bands,with stations received across the entire dial. Dial accuracy was quite good too. I would compare sensitivity on AM to typical 6 transistor reception from the 1960's. Usually this is lacking in today's radios, but not so with this one. As nighttime atmospheric conditions get better on AM, I'm even hearing stronger reception. On FM,I would compare it to 8 or 9 transistor performance, with no FM drift whatsoever. Those old enough to remember that was a big problem years ago with early FM. Just remember that this is FM mono,not stereo. If you want stereo you probably want a Walkman type radio. And those usually don't have the best reception, but do provide great audio. The audio quality on this isn't bad for a pocket size. No complaints. I think it's just the right size. If you want something smaller I'd consider the Kaito,though the reception wouldn't be as good as this,nor would the audio. Another reviewer comparing this to the newer ICF-26 claims that radio has slightly lower (bassier) audio, but slightly less sensitivity. It supposedly has much longer battery life,though that hasn't been a reported problem with the S10. The red l.e.d. tuning indicater is very helpful too,and will usually light up when tuning a stronger station. Another nice thing I found on FM is the radio didn't seem overwhelmed by really strong stations, which is very impressive for this class of radio. Tuning is quite smooth,but it does need to be done slowly for best results. I would rate the reception as AM: good,better than most small radios today. FM: very good to excellent. Audio: very good.
