Great for high gain
I think the tone profile of the Black Winter as shown on Seymour Duncan's website is pretty accurate. I replaced a 'Designed by EMG' Ibanez bridge pickup with this, and I could clearly notice higher treble and mids, not to mention an overall higher output. I just rolled down the tone knob and adjusted the amp EQ for more bass to achieve a heavy tone that I quite like. I didn' try it for mid-gain (hard rock) yet, but I tried it clean (for a very short period) and it was pretty good. Don't let the branding style and the name make you think of this as a black-metal-only pickup. It's pretty much a SD Distortion with a different EQ profile. And I like it.
