Reviews"A beautiful tale, awash in the seasalt and sweat, bait and beer of the Havana coast. It tells a fundamental human truth: in a volatile world, from our first breath to our last wish, through triumphs and pitfalls both trivial and profound, what sustains us, ultimately, is hope." -- The Guardian "His masterpiece... a perfect piece of work." --Mario Vargas Llosa "The old man embodies the ambition and courage it takes to live, and the need to redeem yourself again and again in your own eyes. When at last after ntold agonies you hook the prize, the achievement of a lifetime, the biggest damn fish out there...it falls apart. The story is about the fact that life ends--a hard-to-ignore truth that we spend our days ignoring. All you have is the moment, this moment." --Abraham Verghese "Here is the master technician once more at the top of his form, doing superbly what he can do better than anyone else." -- The New York Times
SynopsisThe Old Man and the Seais one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal -- a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss. Written in 1952, this hugely successful novella confirmed his power and presence in the literary world and played a large part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature., Told in language of great simplicity and power, this story of courage and personal triumph remains one of Ernest Hemingway's most enduring works. • "The Old Man and the Sea" - story telling at its finest.

My journalist father was 4 years younger than Hemingway. There's a story that they met at some point, but I have no details. When I was a high school senior, Dad gave me "The Old Man and the Sea", saying, "This is how it's done" - a high compliment from my very exacting word-crafting father. I've read all of Hemingway's books, this one more than once. "The Old Man and the Sea" is classic, then and now. The title almost, but not quite, says it all. Enjoy.

  • Riding with "the old man"

My first time reading Hemingway, I was disappointed, not with the style nor content, but because it was too short. The story left me wanting more. When Santiago is out in his boat, I could feel the heat of the Sun, smell the salty sea and the waves making me rise and fall with him. Most acutely, I felt his experience of aloneness and eagerness to land the giant fish that pulled him farther and farther away from land. I now live in anticipation of reading more from this great author, and completely recommend this short, but powerful, literary masterpiece.

  • Yes, Say It in A Few Words.

Like Hemingway's writing style to convey interesting ideas with few words. I felt like I was in the boat with the old fisherman, living his life experience.

  • Classic Hemingway

Filled with hope, sadness, victory, defeat, struggle, and perseverance. This book tells a human tale with no "story book ending." It's a keeper. Just reread it for the 1st time in decades and had forgotten what a powerful story it is.

  • A must read for all !

A must read for all! This is an example of mankind's bravery and will to never give up against all odds. The capacity of a man's will to survive sometimes goes untested but is also unmeasurable.

  • Hemingway's best novel

To me this is Hemingway's best novel. It is simple but intricately interwoven with the old man's past and present in addition to his relationship with the boy.

  • Hemingway nailed it!

I had forgotten when I read this as a child how sad it was. I remember now why I’m vegetarian.

  • Marginalia all over the book, plus doodles and drawings. Reading through them was difficult but thankfully the book is short. Go Hemingway!
