Released just a few years before a similar British film, ZULU, this 1962 English gladiator film depicts the tiny army of Sparta and their efforts to stave off an attack by Persian forces which greatly outnumbered the Spartans. Led by King Leonidis (Richard Egan), the Spartans army consisted primarily of a security force who guarded the palace. This rousing gladiator epic boasts an incredible cast including Diane Baker, Ralph Richardson, and Kieron Moore.

Always an old favorite...
The antithesis of the campy, mythical "300." Does not explore the Spartan military culture but does better at portraying the Greek response to Xerxes and DEFINITELY does a better job portraying the reality of Spartan warriors. Unlike the nearly-naked demigods of "300" these Spartans are portrayed wearing much more complete protective armor. Even at that they do not accurately show the Spartan warriors as the most heavily-armored and best-protected warriors of the ancient world. Now if someone will buckle down and film "Gates of Fire" so we can actually get a grasp on Spartans as walking tanks wearing helmets that had eyeholes and a narrow slit for breathing/speaking, a heavy leather collar to protect the neck, thick bronze curaiss, leather and bronze straps extending from shoulder to elbow, bronze greaves from elbow to wrist, multiple layers of leather and bronze straps extending from their waist to below the knee, and bronze leggings that covered from over the knee to down partway over the foot. As long as these elite of the elite held the shield wall they could not be defeated. It was only when that shield wall was broken that they ever experienced defeat. "The 300 Spartans" fills the gap between comic-book mythos and the gritty reality that someday, hopefully, will make it to the screen.

Bitter Disappointment
Read various reviews from different sources before I made this purchase. All the reviews pretty much stated the same thing, it was worth a look, nearly historically accurate, bottom line pretty darn good reviews. It is not a good movie, it is not historically accurate. At times it's laughable but it's not bad in a good way like a schlocky old time sci-fi movie. And I'm surprised the director Rudolph Mate is a competent director, what was he thinking? He didn't have just an off day but an off few months while filming this turkey. I suppose it gets some credit for being the first to tell the story of Thermopolis.
