Expected more, but there are some workarounds
This shut off valve ends up being one of the two weakest parts on what is supposed to be one of their "heavy-duty" sprayers. It will not last long if you are spraying more aggressive chemicals that don't get along with brass, such as chlorine. For others, it may last for many years. It is not designed to be disassembled for a good clean-out and lubrication, or to replace an O-ring that ultimately fails. It is important to be able to access all critical parts of sprayer for on-site service without delay. You already know this is not an inexpensive component. There is no "upgrade" as the supposed tougher shut off valve has a different hose interface. All that in mind, Chapin does support their customer base if problems are encountered, so that's a ray of sunshine while the chemicals are dribbling out of the handle and the pressure drops. What helps prolong its life? Rinse out and flush as soon as possible. If the sprayer needs to be in service all the time, put silicone grease or similar on the valve shaft before the first use and frequently thereafter.
