A little more firmware support would be nice. My ratings on this are based on my price paid, current average prices, and my experience with "cheap" androids. People complain about the aspect ratio of this compared to , mainly, a Nexus 7. I have had a first gen Nexus 7 since it hit the market, and my only complaint was the narrow width to length of the screen. Meaning landscape mode is more the norm. Well I don't want to do landscape. First world problem, I know, but that is the same problem I have with iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, until the 6+ I went back to a 4s. The screen on the Ellipsis 7 makes me feel less like I have to tilt to read or view. The forward speakers are pretty lima charlie, I mean, loud and clear, as opposed to any that have them out the back cover. The other main grip from the reviews was the 4g lte only, no fallback to 3g or 2g if lte isn't hitting your area at the moment. My Nexus 7, and all but one off brand tabs were only wifi anyway. This would have been a big issue back when new, but I got this one used, probably not going to set up a Verizon data package anyway, as most of you that are reading this too, so, summary:
#1 most important, to me,: It's still alive and well after two weeks with Techno Destructo, referring to me, NOT the GWAR guy. A lot of tech has met it's maker at my hands, buy it broken, fix it to new, and if kept, break it. Like a Combat Engineer. So frail and dainty the Ellipsis 7 isn't.
Fit and finish, compared to Nexus 7 1st gen: Nexus has the edge, but a more delicate feel, and much better support, Asus and the development community back the Nexus like a boss, still. If you want to root, flash ROMS and all that, go nexus. The Ellipsis 7 is easily rooted, but I have not found any ROMs or developer community support for it. I got mine with the latest offered OTA update 4.4.2 already installed, and it's not too bloated, or bogged down to where you NEED to at least Odex and Deodex the stock ROM to get decent performance.
Compared to any of the "clone" or "Chinese knock off", which is where almost all tablets and cell phones are made anyway, even Samsung, A more quality feel, smoother interaction with the O.S. and stuff working as it should right off without fiddling around. If you can get one of these, even good shape used, for the same amount as an "off brand", get the Ellipsis 7, which is an "off brand", made by Quanta, for Verizon, but an off brand made to a better standard.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Your actual mileage will vary, lead foot.
