Good, protected ash vac, but Chinese made

So i needed a good vac designed to help clean a pellet stove safely. This one seems to fit the need. Metal can, metal lined hose, metalized filter. It's quieter than most vacs of this size but still plenty powerful. Easy to use. My only wish for improvement would be to make it a bit smaller. Ash vacs don't need to be that big. Also, it is advertised as "made in USA." It's not. Standard Chinese stuff, so quality is in question.

    Simple to use but......

I had been told by a friend that she uses a vacuum like this to clean out the ashes in her wood burning stove. So when I found this I was very excited to try it out. Putting it together was very easy, great owner's manual, and the wand extensions were long enough to reach the end of my wood burning stove. The problem was that it over heats very easily but glad it caught the surprising debris I had no idea was in my starter box. I would suggest you NEVER try to open the canister in the house, take it outside to open. Even as careful as I was I got ash over me, the floor, and all over the outside of the canister. It did seem to make the ash much less than what I thought was in the stove because the ash was much finer & it only filled about a quarter of the tank. I still dumped it & cleaned the filer before reassembling it. I know for me although it states that you can use it with BBQ hot ashes, I wouldn't because of what it might do the filter. Although I'm use to shoveling the ash into a metal can, this vacuum does clean the grates & ash reservoir very well. I do recommend it but conditionally.

  • Better than my Craftsman ShopVac

The AshVac has plenty of suction to do what it is supposed to. I have a wood burning fireplace insert and heat my house with it, so it is in use a lot. There are a lot of ashes, the this machine gets them all. There is only one limitation: There are often chunks of charcoal left over after the fire goes out and those tend to clog up the hose. I wish the hose were larger. I am in the process of creating a solution for this problem, and if it works, I will patent it, because I'm sure I'm not the only one with that problem. Overall, the vac is solid, well built and fairly quiet (still sends my dog running for the bedroom when I turn in on). The metal bin gives me the peace of mind knowing that it will not melt or catch fire if I suck up some hot embers.

  • Okay vacuum for the price

Okay here is my honest review about this vacuum cleaner. I am a realistic down-to-earth type of person and this is my opinion. The only downfall about this vacuum cleaner is the motor The vacuum cleaner has a 10 amp motor which seems to run a bit hot after a few minutes of running. It does have a lot of suction from the nozzle and it also puts out a good amount of air when you switch it to the blower setting. The motor does seem to struggle a little bit, however it still does a very good job. The canister measures 15 inches tall from the bottom of the base to the top of the motor housing. That does not include the rollers that are included. The rollers stand about 2 inches off the ground. The canister is approximately 13 and a half inches wide. If I were to compare it to something (size-wise) I would say it's about the size of a small 5 gallon shop vac. Not the larger model shop vacs, but the smaller ones. The end of the hose has a opening of 1.5" and the length of the rubber hose from the canister to the end of the nozzle is about 50 inches not including the attachments. The hose is made of a material that feels more or less like rubber with a inner steel liner. They also include two hose extensions which are rigid plastic tubes measuring 14 inch long. Both of them measure 1 and 1/4 inches at one end and 1 and 1/2 inches on the other end. They also include a steel tube attachment which measures 9 inches long with the same diameter as the others. They also include a hardwood floor attachment which is just your basic floor attachment that has two rollers on it and a small brush that rubs against the floor. The brush does not spin, it's simply just a squeegee for hardwood floors that has suction the end of it. And the last and final attachment that they include is a small detail brush which has a very small opening with nylon bristles on the end of it for cleaning inside nooks and crannies. It also works good as a blower to blow dust out from tight spaces. The cord that comes with the motor is actually very very long I would have to say that it is probably around 16 foot long. The filter that they include with the vacuum seems to do a very good job at keeping the dust down inside the house. The filter is extremely fine. It also does a very good job at capturing all of the fly ash. Because the filter is designed to capture fine particles I believe that this is why the motor gets hot after running for long periods of time. I have not vacuumed up hot ashes with this vacuum cleaner. I do not think that the filter would last long if you suck up hot coals. It would probably burn a hole in the filter if you do. So overall, I would say that for the price of under $100 this is a very good vacuum cleaner that will help get the ashes out of your pellet stove without creating a ton of dust. As long as the motor doesn't burn out, see this vacuum cleaner lasting several seasons. But as long as you empty the canister out and clean the filter often I don't foresee the motor burning out. Is it the best vacuum I have ever owned for removing ashes? No! However I do think that it is the best vacuum under $100 and it does a very good job for what I needed to do, and that's to remove ashes from my pellet stove.

  • Not made as well as I'd hoped

This ash vacuum has so far done a good job of keeping my pellet stove clean. It makes it way easier to do a daily cleaning than trying to sweep out the ashes. My concerns though include that 1.) the metal clips that secure the top to the drum are poorly made and thereby allow the clips to come loose very easily and 2.) The motor actually heats up so much with use that it puts hot air out through the exhaust. Yes, I am careful to not be vacuuming hot ash, so the motor overheating is the only possible source for the hot air exhaust. I am fearful that the motor will burn out prematurely.

  • Capable product, good quality.

Excellent price with free shipping? No brainer! Received this product two days after ordering, very surprised at such speedy delivery! Looked at a few different ash vacs, this one stood out. I would recommend this product . I would rate 5 stars, but like other reviews I've seen, the motor does get very warm very fast, so I try to limit run time when cleaning my stove. Remains to be seen if motor heat will affect longevity. Vacuum is very strong, even when I use the floor attachment. No dust/ash leakage noted while in use.

  • Distinct possibility of a poor motor design in the Powersmith

I bought the Powersmith PAVC101 vacuum new from a store on eBay in January 2016 to use on my Kozi pellet stove . Almost immediately after starting to use, I noticed that the motor was becoming extremely hot. Soon after, the motor began to shut down after only a few minutes of use. I called the company and was told there was an overheat switch in the motor but was offered no solutions for the overheating. Indeed, the vacuum would again work after a long cool down period and I used the vacuum several times more during the 2015-2016 heating season. Move forward to this heating season (2016-2017) and the vacuum's motor barely ran with a grinding noise and with the strong stench of ozone filling the room each time I turned it on. The vacuum is now 9 months old and it has quit running completely. I should note that I never allowed hot ashes to enter my vacuum and I always kept the filter cleaned. The Powersmith ash vacuum appears to be well-built from an external examination. However, I see at least one other reviewer complaining about an overheating motor so there could very well be a design problem in the motor.

  • Get it Now!

This this vacuum is a well-built vacuum, it has great suction and should last a long time. it comes easy to set up, and right out of the box, it also has plenty of attachments. I'm kinda not sure about the plastic tubing that connects to the flexible hose, but it does a great job in my fireplace, not a bit of shoot comes out from the unit.

  • Nice vacuum

This vacuum is easy to clean vs other brands that require having to clean not only the filter bag, but the filter as well. This gem has just the one filter that takes care of both. And, the design literally prevents dust blowing back into the house. Pros, easy to clean, nice long electrical cord, easy to move around with the castors. Solid hose from vacuum to the metal attachment. Cons, Hose does have a tendency to unwind itself from the connections. The extra tools fit loosely on the base and the little brush tool is difficult to use because it keeps wanting to move from one position to another. Other than these issues this vacuum does a good job and I am very pleased with my purchase.

  • Good vacuum

I had quite a bit of Ash in my wood burning stove and it sucked it out with no problem. I had an ash vac before and the filter stopped up constantly. This one is totally different! Would buy another one!
