  • Great buy, made in USA, super support for 30 year old devices!

What a pleasant surprise! Find a company that still supports 30 year old product, offering fairly priced parts that were actually MADE IN USA. Incredible. The process of replacing the gears is a bit of a PITA, but not horrible. I'm going to say it took 90 minutes to do one opener, but I am pretty meticulous when I repair things. And, no, I did not watch an hour of silly videos first! Some tips: You can probably tilt down your opener with the horizontal section of track. You may want to rest it on a ladder or table to have it at a comfortable working height. You will need good quality hex wrenches (the set screws are Loctited and very tight). You will need pin punches to drive out roll pins. You WILL need a small flat file to remove burrs in the shaft from the set screws. Replacing the bushing for the vertical shaft is a little tricky as it fits tightly. I used a small C clamp and two sockets to push the old one out and the new one in. I'm sure you can find a video online of how to do that. The replacement set screws were not usable; they were too long and hit the encoder device, which would destroy it. Reuse the old screws if that's the case for you, but add new Loctite to them. If you warm the grease to ~120F you will find it spreads on the gears quite nicely. Go easy on the plastic pieces; they are old and probably a bit brittle. The bearings, including the motor, are Oilite (oil impregnated) bronze, but the motor seemed a bit dry. I added 3in1 "electric motor" oil (blue can, not the red) to all bushings for startup. Don't go overboard, but some extra oil probably won't hurt. Do NOT use detergent motor oil, however, it apparently damages the bronze. Have fun!
