Blackbird in a Pie
I finally broke down and bought a pie-bird and for the first time my fruit pie did not bubble over onto my oven floor! Who knew it could be so simple? The pie crust didn't have areas of yucky baked on goo at the edges, there was a neat little circle where the bird had sat and it all looked beautiful all because I put that little bird in the center of the pie, arranged the fruit around it, cut a small circle in the center of the top crust and laid it over the bird and it allowed the steam to escape the pie without making the usual mess.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

A Must-Have for Bakers!
Although I've baked many pies over the years, I had never heard of this until I watched a British baking program. Not only does it keep juicy pies from boiling over, it helps to raise the center of the crust so the crust doesn't get soggy. I made a turkey and ham meat pie with lots of sauce in a 10" square pan, and the top crust (a puff pastry) came out beautifully! Just to be sure, I did put a baking sheet on the next rack down under the pan, but there was hardly a spot on it, so no over bubbling to mess up my oven. This is made of thick ceramic and would probably break or chip if dropped, but I keep it in the box when not in use.
