  • Curiously bland, considering the men and their stories

Decided to read the book after seeing the min-series. Yes, it is 2019 and I have only just gotten around to both! The fist test was "how close did the mini-series follow the book? It was pretty close. A few incidents were adjusted, but the biggest change was related to the discovery of the arbeitslager, the work camp. In the series, it comprised almost an entire episode. Here it was far less, maybe a paragraph or two. Trust Hollywood, huh? The second test was "is it well-written?" Actually, no. This is the only Ambrose book I have read and I wasn't really impressed. The writing was dull and a bit repetitive in the use of some phrases. It was also hilarious in this day and age to see the f-word omitted! Glad I read it, but he is no John Keegan.

  • Compelling and riveting

I have been waiting to read this book since the HBO series. The series left out just how cruel, mean and vindictive Cpt. Sobel really was. The men were well trained for D-Day, but I have to wonder at what cost the men suffered.
