Tender Yet a Little Uncomfortable
This is a poignant film endeavoring to deal with a love between a child and an affectionate adult. It does touch on the subject of pedophilia without actually depicting it. The setting is at the end of WWII in the Netherlands between a pre-pubescent teen and a Canadian soldier stationed near the boy's home. They develop an affectionate friendship. The film is well made. The cast is good. As is the story, direction and production values. It is a film that gets a little uncomfortable to watch at times. "For a Lost Soldier" is an important cinematic representation of European experience in World War II. While coming of age stories that take place during that period of history are not unusual, Roeland Kerbosch's film fully embraces a gay perspective that is often merely alluded to in war narratives, for example in Agnieszka Holland's "Europa Europa," which was filmed a few years previous. I am glad to see "For a Lost Soldier" available on DVD and accessible to Region 1.
