Great screen chemistry between Don Ameche and Claudette Colbert
Charming, engaging vintage movie of reluctant, but true love. Don Ameche and Claudette Colbert are always
entertaining. I watch this at least once a year. If you like excellent acting, beautiful B & W cinematography
witty dialogue and interesting character actors, you'll probably enjoy this movie.
This film is a time capsule, taking you into the world depicted on the pages of ELSIE DE WOLFE'S PARIS. In the two pivotal scenes--the evening 'musicale' hosted by the Hedda Hopper character, and the dance hosted in the ballroom of the chateau belonging to the couple played by Mary Astor and John Barrymore--the pages of this book come to life. The women's fashions (in the height of Parisian taste, complete with smart evening hats!), and the decors: the neo-classial music room, and the private card room (where Colbert and Barrymore go to play high-stakes bridge) decorated in draped plaster walls á la John Michele Frank--are every bit as sensational as the stars!
The film is fun, too--silly, but not so much so that it becomes irritating. And the principals (along with Hopper) are a delight to watch, and the script (by Billy Wilder) is literate and bemused with just the right touch of irony, and grace notes of levity! Delightful!
