Poor Girl Marries For Love & Money But Gets No Love
Here's a great, film noir, psycho-drama about a poor model that marries for love & money. She gets the money but doesn't get the love. The rich guy (Robert Ryan) is a sociopath who marries just to prove he's not afraid of the commitment, to his psychiatrist. He treats his wife terribly and tragedy ensues. "Caught" is a tightly woven story that is one of the best of the genre. All the actors are top-notch stars and the director one of the best. It's a film for serious, film buffs and I recommend it highly.
More than noir, it explores the psyche of human action.
This is a rarely seen James Mason early performance featuring an outstanding Barbara Bel Geddes performance as a starry-eyed model charmed into an early marriage with the millionaire (under-rated Robert Ryan) with outstanding camera work and direction. The dvd transfer is excellent and it is certainly worth the wait. It is a highly-rated film that I would give a higher marks for its ambition detailing the obstacles women face in selecting careers or men, in the case of Mason playing a compassionate doctor working hard for his money the old-fashioned way as opposed to Ryan who is obsessed, ruthless, controlling and violent, presaging the tech billionaires..
Caught is a great movie, with the Robert Ryan character based on Howard Hughs
This is a great film noir with James Mason making his American film debut. Originally he was cast to play the Howard Hughs character but he convinced the director that he had played the evil role enough in England and wanted to try a morally upstanding character. Excellent acting by everyone. Barbara Bel Geddes is convincing as the unsophisticated young woman who longs for the good life.
