SynopsisFrom the stunning victory at Pearl Harbor to its dramatic reversal at Midway, the Imperial Japanese Navy swept all before it in its numerous victories in the Pacific and Far Eastern waters. The Imperial Japanese Navy in the Pacific War pulls from many of Osprey's bestselling books on the subject in addition to the most recent research on the subject, including many sources from Japan, and is the most recent and accurate book on this fascinating force. Even after its setback at midway, the IJN remained a powerful force and inflicted sever setbacks on the US Navy at Guadalcanal and elsewhere. The Imperial Japanese Navy focuses on the Japanese ships which fought the battles in the Pacific including design details, where and when they were engaged and their ultimate effectiveness. In addition, the construction, design and service history of each ship from destroyer size on up is included. A comprehensive survey of the submarine force is also included. Modifications of each ship are covered making this a valuable reference source for Pacific War enthusiasts and historians, as well as ship modelers. A short history of the IJN during the Pacific War places all warship design and history in proper context. Finally, a chapter discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the IJN is included ultimately asking the question of whether the IJN really was a modern Navy which was fully prepared for the rigors of combat in the Pacific.

As retired military and a student of the Pacific Theatre I found this to be an outstanding addition to my collection. At times the specific details tend to wear the reader down but what becomes evident is that these details shed a tremendous amount of insight into other works. Many times authors and historians have gone to great effort to identify vessels involved in specific operations on specific dates. This book allows the reader to reference those ships and assess their particular capabilities at that time. It becomes easier to see why senior naval leaders assigned particular vessels to certain operations. This book also allows the reader to reference the fate of each vessel. Again allowing the reader to see at different periods of the war why vessels not particularly suited for operations were used. Another big plus is the abundance of photographs. A good read by itself and an excellent reference after.

  • A good reference work

This is an excellent reference work about the major Japanese warships from the aircraft carrier to the submarine. It is well illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Each ship's details are discussed including design and construction, armament, modifications and wartime service. The book is well organized, packed with information and easy to read. There should have been more detail (the names of ships involved in an action) in the service histories of the ships and the section on the service histories of the submarines is much too brief and lacking in details. Overall this is an very good reference work.

  • An informative and fascinating book.

I've only read parts of the book so far, but I'm happy and impressed with the book: it's a great info book on the warships of the IJN. A great reference book--I build scale models of World War II navy ships so this book helps in building them as well as letting me learn more about these ships. I also own, by Mark Stille, the companion book on the United States Navy ships of the war.
