The cats...both of them...were very curious at first, and a little cautious, but got the idea pretty fast! It's a little bit lightweight, some rowdy catplay knocked the top out of alignment so that it guided and pumped all the water out.... onto the floor....so a little heavier metal might be nice, but it doesn't feel crappy at all....it's well made, the pump even hung in there running dry for a bit! My cat loves it.
I have had 2 of the ceramic Drinkwell models that cost $89.00 each. They are hard to clean and I went through the filters about 2 a month. Way too much trouble. This pioneer is awesome. I put it in the dishwasher and it came out sparkling clean. I can get the filters very reasonable at Petco or online. Great fountain for small animals!
I replaced my Drinkwell with the Pioneer stainless fountain because the Drinkwell is made of plastic and harbors mold and bacteria. The Pioneer fountain is SO easy to clean! The replacement filters are cheap on Ebay. My cats love this fountain and have been drinking more water because of it. It's great for diabetic cats or cats with kidney disorders. Also great for ferrets, small dogs, and any pets that love fresh, running water. I recommend using distilled water in jugs if you have hard tap water.
