ReviewsA light hearted, deeply moving novel about a grumpy but loveable curmudgeon who finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous youngfamily moves in next door. This quirky debut is a thoughtful and charming exploration of the impact one life has on countless others-and an absolute delight., Poignant and unpredictable, Backman's book is filled with many twists and turns, as well as enjoyable characters and humorous situations., You will laugh, you will cry, as his heartbreaking story unfolds through the diverse cast of characters that enter his life, all uninvited. You will never look at the grumpy people who come into your life in quite the same way. A very memorable read., A light hearted, deeply moving novel about a grumpy but loveable curmudgeon who finds his solitary world turned on its head when a boisterous youngfamily moves in next door. This quirky debut is a thoughtful and charming exploration of the impact one life has on countless others--and an absolute delight., [T]he revelations about his past are what make the story so endearing. Suffice it to say that along with the characters in the story, who come to discover that Ove is more than just the grumpy old man they first met, the reader is in for an enjoyable ride. A Man Called Ove reminds us that even the most difficult people have a back story that helps explain their current way of interacting- and perhaps, reveals the positive side of those qualities., Readers seeking feel-good tales with a message will rave about the rantings of this solitary old man with a singular outlook. If there was an award for 'Most Charming Book of the Year,' this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down., A funny crowd-pleaser that serves up laughs to accompany a thoughtful reflection on loss and love... The author writes with winning charm., In turns moving and funny. . . I wager that you'll soon fall in love with Ove and be deeply moved by his situation, and after spending time with him, may perhaps gaze at the world around you with a little more empathy than when you turned the first page., This charming debut novel by Backman should find a ready audience with English-language readers... hysterically funny... wry descriptions, excellent pacing... In the contest of Most Winning Combination, it would be hard to beat grumpy Ove and his hidden, generous heart., There are characters who amuse us, and stories that touch us. But this character and his story do even more: A Man Called Ove makes us think about who we are and how we want to live our lives. A Man Called Ove seems deceptively simple at the start, yet Frederik Backman packs a lifetime's worth of hilarity and heartbreak into this novel. Even the most crusty curmudgeon will love Ove!, A charming debut...You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll feel new sympathy for the curmudgeons in your life. You'll also want to move to Scandinavia, where everything's cuter., An inspiring affirmation of love for life and acceptance of people for their essence and individual quirks...a perfect selection for book clubs...bittersweet, tender, often wickedly humorous and almost certain to elicit tears., A charming debut…You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll feel new sympathy for the curmudgeons in your life. This quirky debut is a thoughtful and charming exploration of the impact one life has on countless others-and an absolute delight., A magnificent homage to humanity and to the possibility of friendship and faith in long-lost love. It covers a lot of ground: marriage, love, race, class, division, gentrification. It's one of those good stories that connects., An inspiring affirmation of love for life and acceptance of people for their essence and individual quirks. A Man Called Ove is a perfect selection for book clubs. It's well written and replete with universal concerns. It lacks violence and profanity, is life-affirming and relationship-driven. The book is bittersweet, tender, often wickedly humorous and almost certain to elicit tears. I contentedly wept my way through a box of tissues when I first read the novel and again when I savored it for a second time., Even the most serious reader of fiction needs light relief, and for that afternoon when all you want is charm, this is the perfect book., One of the most moving novels I have read this year. I defy anyone to read this book and look at a quiet withdrawn person the same way ever again., A Man Called Ove is exquisite. The lyrical language is the confetti thrown liberally throughout this celebration-of-life story, adding sparkle and color to an already spectacular party. Backman's characters feel so authentic that readers will likely find analogues living in their own neighborhoods., A funny crowd-pleaser that serves up laughs to accompany a thoughtful reflection on loss and love… The author writes with winning charm.

SynopsisNow a major motion picture A Man Called Otto starring Tom Hanks! #1 New York Times bestseller--more than 3 million copies sold! Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon--the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell." But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn't walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time? Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations. Fredrik Backman's beloved first novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. Loving a Curmudgeon

This book is so wonderfully written that it captured my heart. Ove's story is told in such a way that you cannot even begin to understand what will happen next. The way you find out about his wife is uniquely written and you can't help but ache for Ove. The cat on the cover is only part of how Ove's life is turned upside down with his new neighbors. I'm keeping this book because I know I will want to read it again someday. It's simply a beautiful love story.

Don't waste your money on this book!

I bought the book based on other readers' reviews. Only reading the first couple pages, I found it was boring. Ove is just an sad stubborn man who had lost his wife.

  • Slow to Build but Worth the Wait

This book starts out slowly and after a few pages I was wondering what I had gotten myself into. Ultimately, it is a satisfying and heart-warming take on life. The ability of the author to convey humor and humanity, in a natural way, while not being heavy-handed, is wonderful!

  • GOOD PSYCHOLOGY

Good read. Didn't like the characters when first introduced and just loved them in the end. A good lesson on how people mold and change us. The author knows how to wield words

  • A Man Called Ove

The book was very good. However, I feel that someone who is dealing with a depressed love one who has considered suicide may find this difficult to read in the beginning.

  • A Man you want to get to Know

This book took me by surprise. It is about a curmudgeonly fellow who is easy to dislike. But the book develops slowly and beautifully his character. Although I finished reading the book about a month ago, I still think of "Ove". : )

  • book, A Man called OVE

I liked this book. This man always was so very particular about many things, to the point of being rigid. Many times throughout the read, I wondered how I would react if I met a man such as OVE. He built a shell around himself, which many found difficult to penetrate. But behind the front of his hardness, was a man who helped others when they were unable to accomplish the things that they tried to do.

  • Hope the movie is as good as the book!!

I saw the previews for the movie and want to see it: but I like to read the book first, to compare. So far the book is awesome and I hope to find more books by this author.

  • Heartwarming!

This book made me both laugh and cry! I really like this Author - he writes 'true to life' characters that I believe we can all relate to at one point or another in our own lives.

  • Book Club choice

I bought this book to read for my book club. It was more of a collection of vignettes than a story with a plot. For me, it was just a chore to tick off my list so I would be prepared to listen and contribute; nolthing more. Would not have bought it had it been available in my library...
