A guide for clearing out and disposing of your aged parent's home

This book is a must read for all adult children who must face handling the affairs of aged, frail, or disabled parents. This book concentrates on sorting through and disposing of the family home and its contents. The author will walk you through this emotional minefield, step by step. The author has clearly navigated a tearful path through this process herself and is an excellent guide for those who must face this ordeal.

    OK IF YOU'RE SOMEBODY

The problem throughout this book is the author, because of his profession, knows experts in the various fields and calls on them for their opinions. He has associates who give estimates of values of art work, furniture and so forth. Can you pick up the phone and call people you know to get this advice? Probably not. The writer has his fans that write glowing reviews, which is okay, but this is not really very helpful to the rest of us. Very disappointed, save your money. If you plan to downsize or move, try another title.

  • Downsizing - An Emotional Decision?

An emotional decision, that's what downsizing can be if you let it. This book brings into focus that your "stuff", even the stuff that has been handed down to you and brings back memories, does not have emotion. They are merely tangible items. You'll learn to separate your emotions about items and instead remember those who gave them to you. Save a few precious pieces and write a bit about them, who have them to you, when, etc. If you don't have room for all of the items you want to save, take pictures and place them in a scrapbook. These are just some of the points made in the book. You'll also learn what companies to contact if you must have an estate sale. I had read this book from the library and decided to buy a copy for myself and a friend and will diligently follow the advice as my husband and I downsize...for the third time and I hope the last time.

  • A must for households

I just got the book and have gone through it briefly. Some of ideas in it are what you hear about or read in articles and common sense, others are little more detailed out, with alot of thought. Buying on Ebay was much better price, and well worth it. While I got this for me, having a hard time getting rid of things, especially generations of family items, photos, it would be good for any families starting to deal with their parents downsizing, before of after the necessary move, change, or sale of a home.

  • Lots of information

Bought this book just to help me get rid of stuff I did not use or did not need. I know a lot of this is just common sense but it helped to hear it from someone else's perspective. Easy & entertaining to read.

  • Keeps me on the right path

I am 81 and needing to downsize, not knowing what to keep and what to give/sell/donate or just toss. This book has given me some relief as to what to do with the things I don't use and still have kept. I would like to sell my home and move to a smaller home, so this book is perfect for what I need to know. I'm so glad I ran into this book in order to purchase it.

  • Aptly named!

This book was extremely informative, and written in a way that made the downsizing process very much easier with its useful information. Down to earth and chock full of everything you need to know! Helps deal with the emotions as well as the "how to" process.

  • Interesting Reading

I have only started to read the book but it is very true. I have downsized my parents and in laws and it addresses some of the things I experienced. It explains the feelings I have gone through. Easy to read. Lots of good information about having an estate sale.

  • And the information is very complete and easy to understand and easy to follow.

Complete, thorough and easily understood. It is very clear in explaining the recommendations for the guidelines of what to do, when to do it and how to do it (and why to do it in a particular way).
