    Best Headphones under $700

First off, I cannot stress this enough, these need a good amp with plenty of power, No, they deserve a good amp! At least an Asgard 2, yes a Magni / O2 will work, but no it's not good enough for these. Get a Gustard H10, Teac UD-301, Chord Mojo or maybe a Jotunheim if you really want to experience these for what they are. The Best, most Versatile Headphone in (at least) the under $700 range. Great for Rock, Electronic, Pop, Hip Hop, Blues - probably good for any genre as long as you like an intimate ON Stage or Front Row sound. Pros: Everything Bass - Tight, Fast, Controlled, Layered ( 3 Planar), can hit hard especially if you can EQ (will not distort the sound by doing so) Mids- Sweet, Warm, Forward (great for Vocals) Treble - Detailed, but not overly/ artificially so. Aggressive, but not sibilant and still smooth. Natural sounding Cons: Sound stage isn't big, nice and intimate if you ask me. Some will prefer larger. Imaging is good, but there are better (Hd 700 comes to mind). Comparisons: Vs. Hd 700 - Similar in a lot ways, Bass is a little better on 400I, Mids are similar, Treble is better on the 400I, but slightly more detailed on HD 700. No fatigue on the 400I, I do get some on the 700 from longer listening sessions. Probably due to treble spike at 6khz. Which may also be why they sound a slight bit more detailed. 700 has larger sound stage by a lot. Vs. HD 650 - 650 has lusher mids, everything else 400I kills it. Bass is much tighter, faster, controlled. Treble is not rolled off and has similar levels of detail. Way faster response on the 400I. 650 sounds slow and boring in comparison. Vs. HE-400S - Very similar, if you can't afford the 400I, get the 400S. 400S is a liitle thinner / colder, maybe slightly less detailed. You can find the 400I for close to the 400S price, definitely worth the upgrade... but if it has to be brand new the 400S is probably 90% of the 400I. Vs. HE- 560 - Again similar. 560 has bigger soundstage, maybe slightly better detail. 400I is up close / intimate sound - 560 is 20 rows back. 560 slightly colder sound, not as warm as 400I. Very good, but not worth 2 times the price. 400I (other than soundstage) is 98% of what the 560 is. If you don't hear them A/B you probably can't tell any difference other than soundstage (This is through the Gustard H10 BTW, which is supposed to pair well for both). I would say I also prefer the warmer sound of the 400I over the colder sound of the 560 - you may be different. Depends on amp / dac and genre of music. In A/B comparison I usually liked the 400I better.

    A good friend.

A true effort in good sound representation without ornaments is clearly present. However, the mid-high range has a little bit of grit in excess and the sound could be more vivid and nourished. The soundstage is quite immersive and the elements emerge separately. Comfort is there but it decays with time causing a little bit of pain on the cheeks. Build quality is reasonable. Bulky but well maneuverable. In conclusion it's a nice piece of gear with it's own features and it can serve those who want to have a better sonic perception. Since I forgot to leave the feedback to HIFIMAN as a sales company, here goes my five star rating *****5. From the order to the reception everything worked like a charm. PS: A dedicated amp is highly recommended.

  • HiFiMan HE 400i

One of best mid-fi headphone and planar driver you can buy in the market. Mid stand out to my ears. Nice but sharp treble, punching fast bass, May not suit basshead. For the price if they are on discount you can't find one well at least for planar driver. As standard price to me may be little to much. As the build clap force may not ideal if you got big head or wide. So I think HiFiMan still need work on fitment. Cup size ear pads and color all petty good feel. But the color finish is finger magnet. The package it is very petty. Personal I do know once took out no-one really put back but headphones these day can be expensive so in this part HiFiMan did it great. One thing I hate most is the headphone cable Surely is easy drive so they put a portable cable. But they should include a home use 6-10 foot big plug cable. You do need time to burn in at least to my ears they sound better as the hours go passed. Anyways this is a long review. I say buy it if on discount. If not I say give it a try as I think rrp is too deep. IMO anyways Cheers

  • Excellent upgrade

Normally I use IEMs. I have an old pair of Grado 225s, which I quite like the sound of but find uncomfortable. These headphones converted me back to full size headphones - I can wear them comfortably for a couple of hours. The soundstage is great, and the detail in mid and hi range is impressive. I can run these both from the headphone amp/DAC I use on my computer and my Fiio X5iis - delightful sound in both settings.

  • Superb sound and comfort

Sound quality and comfort are great. It comes in a very luxurious box and the build quality and materials used seem just fine as well. It's wonderful for private listening sessions. It is also rather big, the detachable cable is rather short and it leaks sound to its environment considerably, which makes it less suitable for use in public areas. It plays well with my iPhone but if you want to enjoy its full potential it requires more power like from a (headphone) amp.

  • Great for music, and gaming if you have a Soundblaster with SBX dialed up.

These are the best value for music, but really need a soundblaster X1 as a DAC for the SBX surround sound, then they're really fun for gaming. Easier to drive than the HE560 or Sundara, but you still need some current to sound their best. a JDS Atom stack works great, even better I just got done testing using a Soundblaster X1 with 3.5mm cables into the Atom amp and it was gaming fun with the SBX 7.1 on 67% to bump out the soundstage. These are the little brother to the more detailed (and heavier) He6se, they share a very similar sound profile. You can equalize them, but for music they're so good out of the box I'd consider it optional for most people.

  • Excellent item

Excellent item with excellent customer service. Replacement parts are available at a reasonable price, which makes or breaks a product like this which is made to see years of use. Between the HE-400i and the HE-400s, the acoustic profile is close enough to not matter all that much which you choose, so if you'd prefer the HE-400i because of the aesthetics, go for it. In any case these are excellent headphones and you will not regret getting them.
