  • Start and run capacitors for fan motors and Air Conditioning compressors.

The fans (inside air handler and outside fan above the compressor) for typical central air conditioners use a fixed capacitor to help them start and run. These capacitors can go bad and need occasional replacement. The compressor also has a capacitor associated with it that is much larger and can also fail or become marginal. Along side of the compressor capacitor the manufacturer often leaves a space marked "space for hard start kit". This Supco Hard Start Kit is usable in that space and is easy to hook up. It has two wires which are connected to the two wires on the existing capacitor (that is part of the original unit). It helps start under low voltage and other hard start situations, like an aging or locked compressor. It comes in different sizes that over lap quite a bit, it is best to know the horse power of your compressor, like 1HP or 1.5 HP and buy a Supco (or other brand) kit that is approximately the right size. This SPP8E for instance is recommended for 1 to 5 HP, which is quite a range. The SPP9E also shows the same 1 to 5 range. The SPP7E shows 1 to 4HP. It does not seem to be critical but again it helps to know the HP rating of your compressor and choose a kit that is a bit higher than actually needed. I believe the kits are active only during start up after which an internal relay disconnects them and relies solely on the original capacitor. I have been running hard start kits on both of my AC units for many years and just recently increased the size I was using after a previous hard start kit failed. You can check capacitors with an ohm meter on a high scale and watch the reading go from nearly a short to a rather high ohm reading, this "swing" shows what is called a "capacitor action" but does not give you a measurement in micro farads (which is the unit for measuring capacitor capacity). If the terminals on a capacitor or hard start kit read zero ohms or "open" it is bad. You can buy capacitor checkers on line for less than $20. Good luck, if you are not comfortable with working in this area call a qualified AC technician. Be sure to remove all power before opening up the unit, all circuit breakers. Note that capacitors can store a charge and zap you so use a screw driver to short out the capacitors after removing power to. The above is useful advice but I disclaim any liability from those that don't understand enough to follow the instructions properly. The units also come with instructions, call the manufacturer if in doubt.

  • It gets the job done!

We ended up having to go with the 5-2-1 because this two-wire didn't work all the time. Depends on the HP. Once upgrading to the 3-wire, it's been smooth sailing since. Living in Las Vegas, you need it to blow cool every time.

  • Good deal

Part works as described. My AC guy wanted $380 for the part and installation. I bought it here and installed it myself in 5 min. Damn thief!!
