Nice cam so far. Just limited ecosystem compatibility

Starting 360 medium with this cam I have just taken a couple of test stills a video but so far im liking it The camera can be used without a galaxy phone. As so far is only compatiple with just a few models. My note 4 is not compatible. Other thing Samsung software is limited to windows. To process the video and stills. Main computer is mac but i also have a PCs. Thats something i already knew and wasnt a dealbreaker for me. So far i like the quality of the design and usability without phone. You justa have three buttons and a small but usabe display. Had no problems setting it and taking video and photos.

  • Top critical review

Poor image quality in VR headset

The image quality is lousy when viewed in the Oculus VR headset and to me that is the reason to buy a 360 camera. The camera is pretty easy to learn to use and the photos may look ok on a camera in panoramic view but the picture is distorted and what good is that? The good news is the stitching is very good. I compared the image quality to the 2 options most people use for creating 360 photos or videos. First, is using the Surround Shot mode on the Samsung phone camera (You take about 30 photos and software stitches them together); and Second, using the Cardboard Camera app (You take a video by rotating in place 360 degrees; again software stitches result). In both of these methods the photo and video quality is very good, much better than the gear 360 camera, when viewed through the VR headset, The negative for these 2 methods is the stitching (only ok to good using cardboard camera and less than ok using the surround mode). Also, cardboard camera does not capture the top or bottom areas of the "360 dome". But for use in VR headset, I easily choose the cardboard camera when comparing image quality and ease of use. I'll wait until a 360 camera comes out that looks in a VR headset.

  • great for starting in 360

this is a great item to start in taking 360 pictures and video. the gear 360 takes awesome pictures and videos. as others have stated, it does suffer the heat problem like other cameras operating in the 4k format. But it's something that takes a little getting use to, just need to be mindful about the unit getting too warm. I've managed to get 15 min of 4k in 80deg F, more runtime on the lower resolutions. when it gets too hot, i pull out the battery and wait few minutes, it cools off pretty fast. for the price i paid, i'm very satisfied.

  • Putting the Gear 360 into action

As my first 360 camera I'm extremely pleased with the simplicity and quality of the images. I was disappointed that the camera would not connect to my Samsung Note 4 using the provided App. However it does connect to the Note 5 tablet. There was no operating manual supplied with the camera when I received it. Time had to be spent on the Internet to find a manual and some time on YouTube to become more comfortable with it's operation. It's a great little camera and I love the 360 photos.

  • Samsung Gear 360 Degree Camera

The 360 Gear camera is an attractive, well-built product. It's bulbous shape makes it a bit awkward to hold, while the pair of lenses protrude enough to be exposed to scratches and dirt. Although there is a built-in data screen for accessing various functions, the screen never fully worked and controlling the camera via downloaded app installed on a cell phone was the easiest way to control the device. It's recommended that the entire user manual be downloaded from the Samsung web site, rather than rely on the almost useless pamphlet supplied with the camera. The tiny micro SD card is quite springy when mounted in the camera, making it easy for the card to pop out and get lost. The access door requires using one's fingernail to pry it open, which can be painful. It's also a bit tricky to close the cover door, as well. The most serious problem has been the inability to view videos on the computer, in that they seemed incompatible with video players on both the Mac, or on Windows. The only output that could be viewed were still images. They were of decent quality. Samsung Support was contacted, but was unable to provide a solution to aforementioned viewing problem. The included mini tripod often loosened, required constant tightening. This camera was purchased at a modest price as an introduction to 360-degree photography, with the possibility of upgrading later to a more capable system, but without the ability to view any videos, it may be deemed undesirable to further pursue that form of photography. Given its modest price, the Gear 360 can be a worthwhile introductory device for the specialized photography, but for those who desire a more capable product they should look elsewhere.

  • Samsung quality, but limited compatibility

Big fan of Samsung here. Love the usual high level of design and quality that I have come to expect of Samsung, but many of the features for this camera rest in the "Gear" app. And the app is only compatible with the latest models of Samsung's top-of-the-line phones. So unless you have the right phone, the camera becomes mostly a stand-alone unit with very limited on-board controls and features. I also own a Samsung G3 smartwatch that works with virtually any Android phone. Why the difference?

  • Not very compatible with iPhone

I have a iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 that I tested this with and with both it can not display video while recording. (it can only display the video before you start recording). to its difference it claims to work with iPhone 6s, 7 models only!.. so forget it if you have an 8 or higher model. I will soon test it with an iPhone x.. if it works properly and if ebay allows me to update this review I will do so. but for now am recording in blind.. and if it does not work with the iPhone x i will resist this item in ebay and try to get some of my money back. as it is this is my typical experience with samsung product, they are good .. but not very polished.

  • Does what i was expecting.

While image quality is mediocre, the ease of use compensates this. I bought this for street view, to capture as-is imagery before construction projects and during land survey. Going with a car slowly captures realtively good photos of the enviorment during daylight, and no user interaction required. Just drive around, and review at the end. The battery is swappable, which is also good, but morover my unit had no problem taking photos while on a power bank. Totally worth the 80 usd spent. As a camera... well, i wont give my sony a6000 back, but try taking panoramas-it just tedious work with traditional cameras. One more thing.Fits good on both my monopod or tripod, but using the tripod means a good portion of the image will be the tripod legs and handle. So i just strap a long monopod to my truck, and for about 25m (80 ft) most stuff us well visible on the photos.

  • High quality build, solid. menu is simple and easy to use. would be even easier if I owed a Samsung phone, found a work-around for the iPhone.
