It's hard not to wonder why the four-disc Music Box even exists. So where does that leave Music Box?. On both counts, this works well. Let's get the basics out of the way: This sounds great, and Andrew Sandoval's liner notes are terrific, particularly the song-by-song breakdown that not only includes the Monkees' reflections, but also those of various producers and songwriters.

  • One of the best compilations I've seen on these guys...

This is a GREAT collection for true Monkees fans and even for casual fans who want a more complete overview than your typical greatest hits collection. With nearly 100 tracks, this covers things from their debut in 1966 to their "Justus" album in 1997, with all the singles (A and B sides), some rare tracks that didn't make it onto some of the original albums, and some very pleasant surprises along the way. I've been a fan of this band since they burst onto the scene over 50 years ago, and the music still holds up beautifully, from their stellar stable of songwriters including Crole King, Neil Diamond, Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart as well as many Monkees-penned contributions. The group that "couldn't play their own instruments" in the beginning (actually they weren't allowed to do anything but sing on their first two albums) morphed into a real band and a really good live act. The songs say it all here, and provide hours of great listening. But don't listen to me...put the discs on and listen to the band!

  • Monkeys Music Box Rocks

There are albums that I have on vinyl that I would not give up. There are albums that are fine on CD for me. There are some that I have multiple copies in different formats. I had the first four Monkees albums as a kid. As I was growing up I was a bit embarrassed about them and gave them away. Many years later I started replacing them. So, when I came across Music Box, I saw that it had pretty much all of the material that I cared about. I don’t need The Monkees on vinyl. The people who put the collection together are not only super knowledgeable fans, but have done this before and they did a great job. Now I have all my favorite Monkees tracks in one convenient collection on CD. I don’t love all of the tunes, but all of the tunes I love are there. For casual or serious fans, Music Box is a great choice.
