50 years after "Bitter Tears: Ballads of the American Indian" was recorded, a collective of top Americana artists has come together to re-imagine and update these songs that meant so much to Cash, who died in 2003. The "Bitter Tears" album held a special place in Cash's canon, and that in many ways the issues it raised still resonate today. The album features American music giants Kris Kirstofferson, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Bill Miller, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, and Norman Blake (the guitarist and only surviving member from the original recording sessions) as well as up-and-comers The Milk Carton Kids and Rhiannon Giddens.

Notes2014 release, a 50th Anniversary tribute to Johnny Cash's landmark album BITTER TEARS: BALLADS OF THE AMERICAN INDIAN. This album was produced by Joe Henry and features performances from Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Bill Miller and many others. Of all the dozens of albums released by Johnny Cash during his nearly half-century career, 1964's BITTER TEARS is among the closest to the artist's heart. A concept album focusing on the mistreatment and marginalization of the Native American people throughout the history of the United States, it's eight songs spoke in frank and poetic language of the hardships and intolerance they endured. Now, 50 years after it was recorded, a collective of top Americana artists has come together to re-imagine and update these songs that meant so much to Cash. The album features American music giants Kris Kirstofferson, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Bill Miller, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, and Norman Blake (the guitarist and only surviving member from the original recording sessions) as well as up-and-comers the Milk Carton Kids and Rhiannon Giddens, interpreting the music of BITTER TEARS for a new generation.

  • Moving and respectful, these old songs educate/ remind us of a bitter/ sweet history.

If you care about history...or the treatment of Indigenous people ... or if you love folk music ......or if you love Johnny Cash (and respect his work + passion) .......then you won't fail to appreciate this album. It would even be a good way to introduce history and present day issues to school students - as the lyrics and sentiments are simple yet stirring.

  • Excellent CD, bad jewel case.

Songs, and subject matter were fine. The songs are modern cover versions of the Johnny Cash CD focused on the plight of the American Indian as the white man moved into the Americas. The CD itself was in excellent shape. My only complaint is that the jewel case arrived broken at the hinge. I looked inside the shipping package, which provided little protection, but did not see any broken plastic. That means to me that the CD was originally shipped in a broken jewel case. So, I will need to replace the case, which means that the CD will cost more than the original purchase price.
