Title: Callaway Went Thataway. Where in blazes is Smoky Callaway?. So they turn up the next best thing, Colorado cowpoke Stretch Barnes (Howard Keel), an uncanny lookalike who fills Smoky's boots surprisingly well.
Two ad executives can make money by reviving interest in cowboy actor Smoky Callaway, but no one' s seen Callaway for ten years. When an extensive search fails to locate the star, the executives substitute a lookalike, Stretch Barnes. Barnes proves to be a better Smoky than Smoky himself. Stretch really cares about his fans, whereas Smoky is an alcoholic womanizer. The scheme is going well until the real Callaway appears, wanting a piece of the action. The comedy is funny without being silly, and the plot appeals to adults without resorting to crude language or sex. Howard Keel is amazing. He is likable as Stretch, and repellent as Smoky. If you like vintage black and white comedies, this one's a keeper.
