I've been using the Gatorskin Hardshell tires for multiple cross country bike tours over the past few years. Flats are few and far between and I can easily get 5000+ miles out of these tires. Gator Hardshells
Living in the desert of the great Southwest with "bullhead stickers", cacti, glass, and metal debris, having a good set of tough tires is essential. I've bought two sets of these tires. One for a 1980 27 x 1 1/4" Schwinn road bike, and one for a 1996 Cannondale 700 x 25c full Campagnolo road bike. Both sets can, and do, handle the rough conditions they were purchased for. Gatorskins...good to go!
These tires have great traction. I do not find them to be heavy at all. Rolling resistance is similar to any other high end tire. They were much more easier to put on than Schwalbe Marathons, which I have on another bike.
