Quite a ride! A strong cast, an engaging story, great visuals, an exciting sound track, and the Train, itself
The iconic Albert Finney. Over the years he has given us Tom Jones, Hercule Poirot and Winston Churchill, each a remarkable character, distinctive and memorable. There have been several Poirot actors over that time: David Suchet has made Poirot his own in the TV version. My favorite film Poirot is still Peter Ustinov. But for the movie version that stands on its own, the icon, it's Albert Finney's Murder on the Orient Express from 1974. Finney has 12 strong actors to play off of, but it is Finney's Poirot that owns each scene. Finney doesn't dominate the screen, he cultivates the best out of each character he encounters, like the gardener cultivates his flowers. Ingrid Bergman won an Academy Award for her scenes. The beauty of each scene shines on its own, but the beauty of the overall film is the result of the efforts of the gardener, Finney's Poirot. There is wit, charm, mystery, tension and excitement as an over-complicated story w clashing egos about a murder on a snow-stranded train is whittled down to its own unique denouement. That is what makes this MOTOE so unique, so captivating, and how this film still stands the test of time. A strong cast, an engaging story, great visuals, an exciting sound track, and the Train, itself. I first saw this film in 1974. It grabbed me then, and it still grabs me today.
