Some describe this venture as the beginning of HBOs golden era. This show is like the male version of SEX AND THE CITY, depicting the life and times of a 30-something literary type who whittles away the hours masterminding ways to hook up with the opposite sex. Both shows also employ the use of ample nudity and simulated sex, though DREAM ON certainly was first to attempt it. Martin Tupper (Brian Benben) is a divorced book publisher who tries as best he can to raise a teenage son (Chris Demetral) and remain friends with his psychotherapist ex-wife Judith (Wendie Malick). Though he frequently is shown dating and seducing many a woman, he is not-so secretly still in love with Judith. This passion burns all the more brightly when she marries a brilliant scientific genius that annoyingly embodies the idea of Renaissance Man. This story is punctuated by Martin's subconscious, which often takes the form of interjected old movie clips (similar to the quirky daydreams that gave Ally McBeal such a charmingly complex personality). The dated sound bytes from the films juxtaposed with modern scenarios, draws some serious giggles. Sweet Dreams
Caution: I'm old enough to remember when TV programs and movies were made in black and white. Maybe that is why I find Brian Benben and Wendy Malick hilarious in the early HBO series Dream On. Martin Tupper (Benben) was reared with television and movies from an earlier era often serving as babysitter and mentor. Consequently, he often interprets the vagaries of his own adult life through this black and white lens. Add this to the fact he is newly divorced, navigating both old and new relationships, is a book editor for a B grade New York publisher with a dysfunctional secretary, and has a smarmy TV talk show host for a best friend, there is plenty of material for hilarity. I only regret the show ran for two seasons, but it is a good example of early HBO programming and the rich quality of productions to come. Winning and tragically underrated series
Subject says it all. Brilliant, hilarious, with a lead so lovable you’d follow him down virtually any path. Cannot recommend this series enough. A Great Show
It's a shame that the remaining seasons are not available. This show was superbly cast, and the stories with the blending of old footage is amazing. Somebody had to have done a lot of homework to get the footage that fit perfectly with the storylines. Great 90's Comedy
This show cracks me up. My wife thinks it is a 3 stooges thing or something (she doesn't find it funny) but I love it. I guess not everyone appreciates this type of humor (old film clips let you know what the main character is thinking-going through). I find it hilarious! And as a down-trodden wpm I relate.
