With the rise in popularity of women's soccer comes Mia Hamm Soccer Shootout for Game Boy Color. Players work towards a world championship using either the default United States team and Mia Hamm, or any of the other 31 International teams, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. From the main menu, three different modes of play can be selected. Single Match allows users to hone their skills before moving on to the two other modes of play: Arcade-Style, which is a single-elimination tournament, and the Cup Tournament mode, which includes 8, 16, or 32 teams and involves advancing through designated groupings and onto the Finals for the world title. On offense, users can pass to the nearest teammates and place a shot on goal. Players can also execute throw-ins, corner kicks, goal kicks, and free kicks. On defense, users control the goalie and can slide-tackle an opponent in an attempt to steal the ball. Rushing the ball carrier is also possible, forcing them to either lose possession or pass the ball away. Three levels of difficulty are available. In Arcade mode, this setting determines the strength of competition, with teams rated from one to five stars based on their world match success. In the other two modes, the difficulty level (easy, medium, or hard), determines the speed, accuracy, and aggressiveness of the opponents on the field, but will not actually determine which opponents you'll face. In addition, match times of 2, 5, or 10 minutes can also be selected from the opening screen. Team lineups and on-field strategy can be adjusted at any time. From the edit team screen, which is available during gameplay, players can be substituted in from the bench to fill any of the four positions: goalie, defense, half-field, and forward. In addition, two on-field players can be swapped at any time, and the formation screen allows players to select offensive and defensive strategies by trying different combinations of the three player positions. Each player under your control is marked by a yellow arrow indicator, and a status bar indicates names, the score, and the amount of elapsed time. Players can also switch between Birdseye and Isometric camera views simply by pressing a button.
