High-strung, statuesque Nomi Mallone (Elizabeth Berkely) is determined to be a dancer in Las Vegas, whatever it takes--but she starts out as a stripper. Through her seamstress roommate (Gina Ravera), Nomi catches the attention of the voracious bisexual Cristal (Gina Gershon), star of an extravagant pagan sex show called "Goddess" which plays nightly at the swanky Stardust Casino. Through Cristal's influence, Nomi gets a chance to audition for "Goddess" and is soon involved in all sorts of sordid backstage goings-on, including bitchy dueling with Cristal over Stardust head honcho Zack (Kyle McLachlan). Maligned by many critics upon its original release, SHOWGIRLS has since become a true camp classic, revived for midnight showings and beloved for its decadence, high nudity yield, and outrageously catty dialogue (courtesy of screenwriter Joe Eszterhas). Its director is Paul Verhoeven (ROBOCOP, TOTAL RECALL), so one can safely assume SHOWGIRLS' over-the-top hostility and sexuality is meant to be a satire of American culture. So bad it is great!
Remember seeing this movie at the theater back in my last year of college. The movie seemed so terrible written and overacted by the cast. The girls were very hot though. I noticed that the older I got that the movie is terrible written and overacted but no matter what if it popped up on TV throughout the years I would leave it and not change the channel. It is very cheesy but it is actually so good that it takes several viewings through the years to realize that. It even has a massive cult following now. I can't get enough of this movie. It's one of them 'so bad it's so good' types. I had just one qualm with the DVD itself and that would be the aspect ratio which was extremely off. I had to change the settings & zoom into the picture for full visual effect which in turn distorted the quality of said picture. Alas, it was bearable. Gina Gershon steals the show!
Showgirls is legendary. It's supposedly "All About Eve" in Las Vegas strip clubs. Are the characters engaging? Yes and no. Couldn't care less about the main character played by Elizabeth Berkeley, but Gina Gershon (evoking the Bette Davis turn in All About Eve") was great. Kyle McLaughlin just oozed sleeze. Robert Davi never disappoints and had quite a few amusing lines as the owner of a lower-class strip club. Its one of those movies that's so bad it's entertaining. I hadn't seen it in years and just decided to order a dvd. I don't think you could make this movie now, it would set off too many triggers. Riveting and cult-like
This has been one of my favorite, much watched films of the 90's. The characters are so unreal, unlikable and pompous yet so outrageous in the vein of Ziggy Stardust or Rocky Horror. You can't take your eyes away or you'll miss something totally nonsensical. I applaud the talents of Eric MacLachlan and Gina Gershon. At least their careers weren't too terribly affected.
