Co-directed with surrealist master Luis Bunuel, Epstein combines elements of a number of Poe's writings to create a melancholy and chilling feature. Roderick Usher is a painter working feverishly to finish a painting of his sick wife Madeline, who becomes more exhausted with each sitting. His friend Allan arrives to comfort the couple but Madeline dies shortly after.
