About this product

Product Information

Test Drive 2001 for the Game Boy Color features 13 licensed sports cars, 48 tracks, and 12 locations. The tracks, which can be raced forward or backwards, are set in locations ranging from the busy streets and bright lights of Las Vegas to Washington D.C., Greece, Italy, and other exotic locations worldwide. Car types include Mustangs, Jaguars, Lotuses, and Chargers, which will become available as players win money. The default car is the Lotus Elise.

Single Race mode involves beating the clock and other computer opponents on any of the tracks using any of the cars. Tournament mode gives racers the chance to earn prize money and victories to attain faster cars and better equipment from the Garage, or unlock additional tracks to be played in any of the other modes. For example, earning eighteen consecutive victories will unlock the Ultra Cup tracks for competition.

Cop Chase mode abandons the racing strategy and gives users the chance to become the pursuer by selecting a police cars and going after computer-controlled bandits. While chasing after opponents, users can activate their sirens and flashing lights by pressing the A and B buttons at the same time, after which the user issues the opponent a ticket. The more tickets written, the more money you'll receive that can be used in other modes of play. Finally, the two-player mode gives two players a chance to compete using the Link Cable, racing on any of the unlocked tracks and with any of the cars.

An arrow in the top-left portion of the screen alerts drivers of the general direction the track is going, while overall speed, position in the race, lap number, nitro amount, shield use, upgrade use, and clock indicators are also available. A reduced map of the track, with the other racers designated by different colors, is also available.

Power-ups, which are gained by earning more money through race victories, can help racers by increasing rates of acceleration, increasing the car's top speed, and improving tire traction. Finally, car shield or nitro upgrades can be purchased from the shop for $7000 and $5000, respectively.
