The 1932 film represents another impressive accomplishment of director James Whale although not initially recognized as such by movie critics. Having dropped out of circulation when his other classics ("Frankenstein", "The Invisible Man", et al.) went to TV in the mid-Fifties via Screen Gems, "The Old Dark House" was, for the longest time, unavailable, and thus something of an unknown quantity. How very gratifying that this situation is no more, the picture having been fully restored and made available on DVD.
