Based on the comics by Garth Ennis and the movie that came out in 2004, this game is a dark and gritty third person shooter has a rating of M for Mature. Featuring the voice talents of Thomas Jane, who played the "Punisher" in the 2004 film, it combines raw combat with tactical strategy and stealth. The game offers a memorable gaming experience that can have players acting as judge, jury, and executioner in a merciless underworld. The "Punisher" was first developed as a character by Marvel. It centers around antihero Frank Castle, a police officer whose family is brutally murdered by the mob in retaliation for his participation in law enforcement actions against them. Driven to a life of vengeance against criminals as a result, the USMC veteran dons a black trench coat and becomes the "Punisher." While sporting a black shirt adorned with a menacing skull, Castle doles out vigilante justice by ruthlessly slaughtering criminals and operatives of mob organizations. Castle has no qualms whatsoever about killing truckloads of evil people in his revenge games. His hatred of crime knows no bounds, and no one in the criminal underworld is safe from his extremely violent brand of punishment. The game follows Castle as he takes on elite crime lords and the seemingly endless numbers of henchmen that work for them. The "Punisher" stays true to the comic book atmosphere and story line. Gamers will find themselves pitted against a wide variety of enemies from the series that include the Yakuza crime syndicate, the Gucci crime family, Russian mercenaries, and even the notorious Kingpin. The game allows players to blast their way through opponents with a wide variety of powerful weapons that include automatic shotguns, flamethrowers, machine guns, and more. Furthermore, they will take control of the black clad vigilante as he interrogates criminals in a plethora of unique ways. In order to get criminals to talk, interrogation scenes are generated in which the player must threaten them with death by wood chipper, curb stomping, and even piranhas. The game then offers the player the chance to brutally kill the criminal. The video game is notable for some extremely violent gameplay, and the developers had to make the execution scenes black and white just to keep an M for Mature rating from the ESRB. The "Punisher" for the PS2 stoked a considerable amount of controversy back in 2005, and it remains one of the most violent third person shooter video games on the market today. Fans of the comic book series and games enthusiasts can find that the "Punisher" provides violent entertainment at its finest.
