SynopsisIn this true story--a haunting saga of medical murder set in an era of steamships and gaslights--Gregg Olsen reveals one of the most unusual and disturbing criminal cases in American history. In 1911 two wealthy British heiresses, Claire and Dora Williamson, arrived at a sanitorium in the forests of the Pacific Northwest to undergo the revolutionary "fasting treatment" of Dr. Linda Burfield Hazzard. It was supposed to be a holiday for the two sisters, but within a month of arriving at what the locals called Starvation Heights, the women underwent brutal treatments and were emaciated shadows of their former selves. Claire and Dora were not the first victims of Linda Hazzard, a quack doctor of extraordinary evil and greed. But as their jewelry disappeared and forged bank drafts began transferring their wealth to Hazzard's accounts, the sisters came to learn that Hazzard would stop at nothing short of murder to achieve her ambitions.

  • A tale worth reading.

The book is a detailed story about ( mainly ), two sisters that decide to answer an ad for "treatment". I don't want to tell too much of the story but there were quacks out there even in the early 1900's. A tale that keeps the pages turning and makes us wonder how many more were patients of this woman and husband. Many lessons to be learned from this book. Worth the read. One of those books that you continue to think about long after you finish.

  • Very good book about a sad story.

Compelling story about medical quackery and justice. I recently learned about the Williamson sisters' harrowing story and had to learn more. This book is very good and is written like a novel, which makes it more interesting.

  • Visited the story’s setting.

A non fiction story of a setting only 30 miles from me. I took the time to visit Olalla in South Kitsap and walked in small museum which had real artifacts from murder location. Scary
