The RX-596 provides 80 watts per channel with low distortion. It delivers enough power to comfortably handle the requirements of most rooms and most speakers. The versatile RX-596 receiver can handle up to four independent audio program sources, such as CD or cassette deck, and additional two A/V sources, such as VCR, laser disc, or DVD player. With Pure Direct Switching you can bypass the tone, loudness, and balance controls, routing the signal directly to Yamaha's discrete power amplifiers to provide the purest signal possible. The RX-596 incorporates a separate amplifier solely for the CD input. It bypasses the tone, loudness, input selector and balance controls and assures a pure power path.Logical and symmetrical circuit and component layout ensures the strongest signal and the least interference. Yamaha's ToP-ART base is constructed of composite material designed to dampen vibration and other resonances. It is filled with proprietary materials to further reduce any residual effects. Ergonomically designed "paddle" remote control keypad allows you to control other Yamaha components, such as a CD player or cassette deck from the remote control transmitter included with the receiver. Power on/off button on the remote provides added convenience. The advantage of full range, 20 to 20,000 Hz, damping is that it improves the definition and resolution of the sound output throughout the audible frequency range. Infrared Input/Output ports make the RX-596 an ideal choice for custom installation applications. Record Out selector lets you record one input source and listen to another. Yamaha's unique variable loudness control compensates for the ear's inability to distinguish bass at low volume by increasing the bass proportionally as the volume is decreased. A/B speaker selector allows selection of either a first set of speakers or a second - or both. Up to 40 preset AM and FM stations can be grouped in five groups eight stations. These groupings make it easy for family members to easily access their favorite stations or to have musical genres, such as all the jazz stations, grouped together. Sleep Timer permits a delayed receiver turn off. You can set it for up to two hours in 30-minute increments. In addition, Yamaha's speaker terminals accept banana plugs and a variety of speaker wire.Product Identifiers

It was actually an RX-V596
A great receiver for my application and probably more than I need, but I look forward to taking advantage of the headroom for future expansion. This is a 5.1 surround receiver, but I'm only using 2 channels. It's really very very nice and I actually feel a little bad because I didn't realize what it was until I got it and I probably should have paid more for it had the seller realized.
