Don't miss it!
One of the best BBC series; warm thoughtful plotlines, morality tales whose import goes down with no lumps whatsoever. Funny too. The Beeb has apparently stopped making content for anyone over 50, but there are still DVD resources. Unfortunately, buying used discs has become chancy, and our set has several bad episodes, so that one must watch those on the web and endure the horrible commercial interruptions. Lovely story, great characters, packing lacks security.

Brilliantly written, directed, and--especially-- acted. The chemistry between Judi Dench and Philip Bretherton (Jean & Lionel) is such a delight to watch, We love PBS and most of their family friendly programs.. We love being able to watch them on our very own DVD's anytime day or night. Never worrying that the cable service may go out at anytime and we may have wasted our time watching what we did get to see ... We will be watching this DVD's for many years to come. One of the best
One of the best sitcoms ever, in my opinion. The characters are carefully drawn and exhibit multiple dimensions. The writing is clever without trying to be too terribly clever. The central characters follow lots of traditional modeling (male and female role models) while allowing he supporting characters to act very nontraditional, yet by getting along very well mix the variations together into a coherent whole. Minor characters are allowed even more range -- "the villagers" are very diverting. The sense of whim is always there, allowing he characters to see more alive..... and of course the casting is flawless. Simply put if you want an engaging situation comedy that seems quite realistic, this is a great diversion. If you love some of the past American sit-coms in which the characters seem to grate heavily on each other, relieving their stresses in barbed jests, this will probably seem dull or at least much too polite. It's gentle and warm, not the reverse. Now if you will excuse me I believe I might have a custard tart (it's a joke based on the show).Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

A great sitcom about a middle-age couple which is not a youth-driven story.
An engaging story about a middle-aged couple who discover they had known each other nearly 40 years ago. Interesting characters, a well written script and often snappy dialogue which draws the viewer in and coming back again and again. The story is not youth driven, which is refreshing in a time where almost every script broadcast has to do with the world as we know it can only be saved by a group of all-knowing 16-year-olds. Great characters & series
Love this BBC series. Have caught bits on PBS but was nice to see entire series from beginning. Unfortunately one of the disc is defective & stops towards end. Cleaning it not helped. Was sorry when series over. Loved characters. Want to live w Jean & Lionel!! Very well written humor. Great British comedy series
We started watching this series on our PBS station the last 2 or 3 seasons. We always wondered how the story started and how everyone was related, etc. So getting and watching the whole series answered all our questions! We are about Jean and Lionel's ages and relate to so many of their life adventures, escapades and just day to day life. Lionel has the greatest lines.
