About this product

Product Information

A poor man's Castlevania, Musya: The Classic Japanese Tale of Horror has players guiding Imoto, a young samurai, into the abyss in order to recover a sacred talisman for use in trapping the Evil One. Other than a semi-interesting storyline (based on Japanese mythology), this straightforward action game has little to offer in the way of a good time. Imoto wields a spear and can use magic against an exotic assortment of creatures (including bosses), but gameplay is hindered by sluggish controls, small characters, a weak standard weapon, and frustrating platform-jumping. Adding to the horror are primitive sound effects and dark graphics that need more color.

I bought this game because I’d seen a lot of gameplay footage and it looked really interesting. The backgrounds, sprites, and animation are all pretty appealing. The major issues with this game is the game play. The controls take some getting used to, but the combat is straight up disappointing. It doesn’t flow at all. Most 2nd and 3rd tier games don’t feel as good as something made by Capcom or Konami action platformers, but this one leaves a lot to be desired. I really wanted to like this game, but it’s really challenging in all the wrong ways.
