About this product

Product Information

Break into photography as a hobby or potential career with a Nikon EM SLR 35mm camera. This classic model is a small, solid tool made from copper-aluminum alloy. Since the metal has high-tensile strength, the camera body is extremely durable. It was introduced in 1979 as the first product with a revised category design. The Nikon FG and FG-20 were released shortly thereafter with the same layout. Although the EM has the feel of plastic, its covering actually contains a large amount of polycarbonate material. The unit is among the lightest of SLR cameras, weighing only about one pound. This little 35mm film camera has dimensions of 2.1 x 3.4 x 5.3 inches and goes anywhere with you. In addition to its compact form, the Nikon EM body has a simple set of controls. The various controls are the shutter release, shutter operation mode selector, backlight button, and self-timer. Find these controls on either the front or top of the device. The film advance controls are located on the back. The viewfinder, which is big and bright, has a fixed Nikon "K" focusing screen. Inside the finder, you see a ring - its outer diameter is where metering is emphasized. The camera has a metering range of EV2 to EV18. This design is called center-weighted metering in the photography world. When you start to take a picture, press the button halfway and watch the needle respond to the lighting situation. It drops from its original position at the top and then show the selected shutter speed. After you release the button, the meter stays active for about 20 seconds. The viewfinder covers about 92 percent of the picture field. It also has a 0.86x magnification when you are using a 50mm lens. This manual focus camera has an automatic exposure function that puts it in aperture priority mode at all times. Set an aperture on the lens, and then focus and shoot. The system determines the correct shutter speed on its own. The Nikon EM works well with shutter speeds from 1 to 1/1000 seconds. Beyond that range, it emits a high-pitched beep, allowing you to readjust the shooting aperture and try again. Besides AE, you are able to choose from two manual settings. M90 sets a mechanical speed of 1/90 seconds, while "B" stands for bulb and allows for long exposures. You don't need a shutter release cable, so you have the option to do timed exposures. With the "B" setting, keep the shutter open indefinitely. The exposure compensation button on the front of the camera gives you control when you are either over or underexposed. By pressing it, you activate the system and increase or decrease the exposure by two stops. For even more control, adjust the ASA/ISO film speeds. Use films from ASA/ISO 25 to 1600. The Nikon EM is compatible with a wide variety of system accessories. These include AI, AIS, AF, AF-n, AF-D, AF-I, and Non-G AF-s lenses. It has an instant-return reflex mirror and a built-in ISO-type hot shoe automatic flash synchronization at 1/90 seconds. This is used with the company's dedicated flash units.

  • Great Camera

This product comes with the original case, the manual, strap and the camera is in great condition. The only issue I have with it is there is some dust on the mirror that I can’t seem to clean off, but I don’t think that have an effect on the picture quality. All in all, I love this camera. I used to have it when I was a kid and it is taking me back to good times. Thank you!

  • Nikon EM

Though decades have passed, with auto-focus replacing manual-focus, and numerous program setting, in addition to aperture, and shutter speed priority, and the typical manual marks, but this body was designed to work only in program, M90, or bulb, but it made inroads to SLR's for many. The metering is spot on, and uses a match needle system for exposure management, using generic hearing aid batteries. If your hoping to get a great camera, with spot-on metering, a quality build, and interchangeable lenses, this may be the item for you.

  • A budget camera for all seasons

The EM is Nikon's smallest slr camera and as such it fits comfortably inside a jacket pocket, ready and waiting to catch a decisive moment. With it's aperture preferred meterig all you need to do is focus and You'll have your shot. It's 92% viewfinder means you'll capture just a bit more of the scene, avoiding cutting people's heads or feet. Coupled with the Series E lenses this camera stays compact and fast.. the 50mm 1.8 pancake lens is PERFECT. This camera/lens combination is just as small as the Pentax ME line and smaller than the Pentax MX. Try one, you won't be disappointed. Just don't drop it! They're quite delicate.

    1. Shipping Shipping was fast, I ordered early just in case (this was a gift for my man) but there was no need. It arrived in spectacular time and in a good sized box that wasn't professionally packaged but very good and safe for a vintage camera. 2. Quality and Reliability Camera was as good if not better than the seller mentioned. No dents, scratches, dust, fungus, mold, or signs of wear. Almost like a new film camera. The pictures we took were the exact Nikon film quality I was hoping to get for my special someone. 3. Value Very very good value, you can find EMs for cheaper but they usually are very worn or being sold for parts, this one came like new and was worth every penny, would buy again (thinking about getting one for me). Very good birthday present for someone who has a bit of experience with film and manual DSLR controls and wants to use something with good quality and an awesome lens pairing but won't break the budget.

  • Such a bargin!

This camera was in "like new condition." For a film camera this is an excellent small light weight camera made with remarkable build and performance quality. These can be purchased for a remarkably low price which is such a great value if you desire an excellent film camera. Nothing fancy outstanding performer.

  • Nikon EM

The camera is an old basic film bottom of the line work horse. It takes beautiful pictures. The only thing I might upgrade would be a motor drive for film advance, but that's just an option that sounds cool. It takes no more effort to advance the film manually. GREAT LITTLE CAMERA for those non-digital peeps. Cool thing is you can force it to take pics that are far from just snapshots.

  • Lightweight with reliable and useful features

The Nikon EM was initially marketed as a low end product for entry level photo hobbiest. The Nikon EM and the dedicated Nikon Series E lenses were perceived by the royal Nikon/Nikkor users as non-reliable set of photographic equipement. However, after more than 40 years, the used EM and series E lenses could still deliver satifaction exposure and image quality on film.
