  • A very thorough book but needs charts and tables to present data

This very large book (608 pages!!!!) is the most complete and detailed book available on the history of International Harvester trucks. Published in 1995, the book covers all IH trucks (and successor Navistar) from the first primitive truck in 1907 to the time of publication. The book represents a huge amount of research and effort, and is heavily illustrated with hundreds of black and white photos obtained from IH files. I especially appreciated that the photos nearly entirely represent these trucks when new; a number of book histories of trucks tend to have too many photos of restored trucks or derelict old junk trucks sitting in weedy lots. The only criticism of the Crismon book is that with so much data and so many models of trucks, the book needs tables and charts showing the various models so the reader can sort out the various models and designations. IH tended to assign too many specific model numbers rather than grouping in series with individual options. It is never explained how the various number designations were assigned. Some charts with engines and transmissions would also help. But overall, this is the definitive book on this subject!
