Not quite Hitchcock, but worthwhile vintage suspense
PORTRAIT IN BLACK is the story of the perfect murder. Sheila (Lana Turner) is married to a domineering, terminally ill man. His doctor, who makes daily house calls, is having an affair with Sheila. The doctor decides to give the man a lethal injection. Although Sheila protests, she doesn't stop him. Many people benefit from the husband's death, and no one suspects it's murder. Sheila's stepdaughter, who hates her, thinks maybe Sheila is having an affair, but doesn't suspect the doctor. The lovers could eventually live happily ever after, but their own guilt and paranoia makes them increasingly careless and rash, until the plot is exposed. Turner and Anthony Quinn are excellent as two people emotionally unravelling before our eyes. Most people like MADAME X better, but I feel it's the weaker of the two films, because the action takes place over a period of twenty years, yet Turner appears to be the same age throughout. In 1966, Lana Turner was a very attractive woman of 45, but she is not at all convincing as 25-year-old Holly. The plot, which was believable in 1966, is a bit dated now. Holly's rich husband, who has political aspirations, is away from home much of the time, so Holly has a brief affair (60 days) with another man. When Holly breaks up with her boyfriend, he tries to grab her and falls down the stairs to his death. Holly's nasty mother-in-law pressures Holly into faking her own death and leaving the country so that Holly's husband won't be ruined by the scandal of a murder trial. Since Holly hasn't killed anyone, younger viewers might wonder why she immediately caves under pressure. But given the state of forensics and morality in 1966 --- if a woman committed adultery, she was "bad" so a jury might believe she was also guilty of murder --- Holly's actions are more understandable.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

We enjoyed Madame X, but portrait in black was a bit like a Hitchcock movie and very scary. My 13-year-old son and my 15-year-old daughter found it to be very depressing. Great melodramas with superb acting.
Two great melodramas with Lana Turner. Both films exceptionally executed by the studio. Tasteful decoration and fabulous outfits created for Lana Turner. Her costar in Portrait in Black was Anthony Quinn who played his role exceptionally well and John Forsythe in Madame X was equally great. These are great films from the early sixties that should not be missed. Great transfers from film to disc and great sound.
